In the past, I used to shun organic foods in the grocery store as “too expensive.” I dismissed them as foods that were “just as healthy” as non-organic foods. In other words, I felt that it was not worth the extra expense. But I’ve come around and now view organic produce differently.
A couple of years ago I was convinced that I should seek out and purchase organic foods. The arguments in favor were compelling, just as several decades ago when I was convinced that a more plant-based diet, as opposed to a meat-centric diet, was highly preferable for my own health as well as that of the planet.
My own experience has shown me that I made an excellent decision by choosing a diet centered on organic foods. In my youth and throughout most of my working years as a professional I would often succumb to the common cold, along with the intensely annoying sore throat and then the drippy nose for at least a couple of weeks. Since I started to eat more organic foods and consume high-quality nutritional supplements that are “beyond organic,” I’ve had the feeling that there’s a protective shield around me in the form of a remarkably strengthened immune system. I can’t remember the last time I got a bad cold, and whenever a cold seems to be starting, it appears to touch me very lightly and then move on. In the past, a scratchy throat always doomed me to several weeks of misery, whereas now it never lasts more than few hours and then disappears. As a senior approaching an older age, I find myself considerably healthier than I was in my twenties through my fifties.
Next week I’ll write about the certification of organic foods grown in California and why we can trust the label “organic.”

La Comida Orgánica—¿Realmente Saludable? 1ª Parte
