Advocates of establishing colonies on Mars (Elon Musk immediately comes to mind) contend that we must develop these outposts on this red planetary soil to ensure the viability of humankind. If we do not colonize our celestial neighbor, they argue, then we will certainly face extinction, given the increasing uninhabitability of our mother planet.
Critics pounce on this logic, saying that the likely cause of the multitude of terrestrial disasters we face is due to climate change. And rather than investing those billions of dollars in “escaping” to Mars, we need to focus on reversing the decades of climate destruction caused by fossil fuels, the Trump administration notwithstanding.
Rather than attack climate science and burn its budget to the ground, our government should invest even more in climate research. It should seriously contemplate the opinions of the scientists who are much more familiar with the consequences of climate neglect than leaders of Congress. Instead, lawmakers on one particular side of the political aisle are marching lockstep with their leaders who consider climate change to be a hoax.
“Visionaries” such as Elon Musk seem to imagine a Martian utopia where those who are affluent enough can ride on his spacecraft (which of course benefits Musk) to his Martian resorts. The poor and less affluent, it would seem, will be essentially abandoned and left to fight a hopeless, lethal battle with the raging elements. After all, the path we are on will ensure that sooner rather than later Mother Earth will shut down her systems that had sustained all of nature over the eons of Earth’s history.
Are there any positive aspects to this rich man’s celestial fantasy? In fact, there are.
Indeed, I recall that when the race to the Moon with the Soviets was launched, the critics were decrying the billions that we would spend at the expense of “the poor.” But the space race of the 1950s and 60s generated untold benefits and gave us technologies that we had not even imagined at the time. Certainly, it could be convincingly argued, we on Earth would reap untold benefits from the research required to build sustainable colonies on Mars.
Now if we could just survive long enough on Earth to enjoy those benefits…

Viajar a Marte vs. Luchar Contra el Cambio Climático

Los defensores del establecimiento de colonias en Marte (Elon Musk me viene inmediatamente a la mente) sostienen que debemos desarrollar estos asentamientos en este suelo planetario rojo para garantizar la viabilidad de la humanidad. Si no colonizamos a nuestro vecino celestial, argumentan, nos enfrentaremos a la extinción, dada la creciente inhabitabilidad de nuestro planeta.
Los críticos se abalanzan sobre esta lógica, insistiendo que la causa probable de la multitud de desastres terrestres que enfrentamos se debe al cambio climático. Y en lugar de invertir miles de millones de dólares en “escapar” a Marte, debemos centrarnos en revertir las décadas de destrucción climática provocadas por los combustibles fósiles, a pesar de la administración Trump.
En lugar de atacar la ciencia climática y reducir su presupuesto a la nada, nuestro gobierno debería invertir aún más en la investigación climática. Debería considerar seriamente las opiniones de los científicos que están mucho más familiarizados con las consecuencias de la negligencia climática que los líderes del Congreso. En cambio, los legisladores de un partido político en particular marchan al unísono con sus líderes, quienes consideran el cambio climático un engaño.
Visionarios como Elon Musk parecen imaginar una utopía marciana donde quienes tengan suficiente dinero podrán viajar en su nave espacial (lo que, por supuesto, beneficia a Musk) a sus suntuosos hoteles marcianos. Los pobres y menos pudientes, al parecer, quedarán prácticamente abandonados y librarán una batalla desesperada y letal contra los elementos. Después de todo, el camino que seguimos garantizará que, más temprano que tarde, la Madre Tierra apague los sistemas que han sustentado a toda la naturaleza a lo largo de los eones de su historia.
¿Hay algún aspecto positivo en la fantasía celestial de este hombre rico? En realidad, lo hay.
De hecho, recuerdo que cuando se inició la carrera a la Luna con los soviéticos, los críticos criticaban los miles de millones que gastaríamos a costa de los pobres. Pero la carrera espacial de los años 50 y 60 generó beneficios incalculables y nos proporcionó tecnologías que ni siquiera habíamos imaginado en aquel momento. Ciertamente, se podría argumentar convincentemente que en la Tierra obtendríamos beneficios incalculables de la investigación necesaria para construir colonias sostenibles en Marte.
Ahora bien, si pudiéramos sobrevivir lo suficiente en la Tierra para disfrutar de esos beneficios…
