Every day since the beginning of this year, I listen to the news from reliable, respected sources. Since the beginning of the year, I often find myself wondering why our federal government seems to delight in what seems to be a policy of cruelty.
Consider the following recent issues:
- the blitzkrieg mass firings of new and experienced government employees
- the hostile takeover of cultural centers
- the treatment of immigrants, both legal and illegal
- the blatant discrimination against those who do not align with the straight, white, conservative agenda
- the war on women
- the war on education
- the war on science
- the war on preventative health
- the war on the judiciary branch of our government
- the enthusiastic invitation to notably white populations (think Norway and South Africa) while at the same time barring “racially undesirable” visitors
- the harsh abandonment of Afghans and Syrian Kurds who fought with us and supported us in the war against ISIS terrorists
Obviously, I could spend half a lifetime expanding on this list. But suffice it to say that, currently, we have a government that appears to savor cruelty and apportion it with glee. Why would our government, the one that used to garner respect and gratitude throughout the world, take such a dark turn?
There are several credible reasons for this reversal and the utter collapse of American idealism.
It is no secret that our current federal government harbors a desire for authoritarianism at a level that would make Richard Nixon blush. All the cruelty that we are witnessing, day after day, can be tragically traced to this end goal. There are many motivators, all of which interlock with and enhance one another, for the cruel regime that we currently have in power.
One of the characteristics of a pitiless regime is the insistence that it is dispensing cruelty to “protect” its citizens. For example, we are told that we are being protected against “antisemitism,” “terrorism,” “security threats,” or “radical left ideology” when a careful analysis demonstrates that these claims are either patently false or at least greatly exaggerated. Pushing a cruel agenda in the name of “protection” is a common tactic used by authoritarian regimes.
Cruelty is often featured when the government wishes to preserve its power at all costs. This despotic harshness might manifest itself as, for example:
- nationalism and xenophobia
- dehumanization of immigrants and the gender-diverse community
- corruption (an increasingly obvious facet of our leaders)
- scapegoating
- the manufacturing of drama to distract us from sleight-of-hand schemes that ultimately fleece us of our rights and wealth
- lack of accountability (why else would this administration attack judges as “unelected thugs”?)
- exploitation of natural resources (consider our threats to Greenland, Panama, the people of Gaza,…and Canada, of all places!)
- surveillance (the DOGE team was particularly focused on this intrusion into our lives)
- paranoia, by which immigrants are perceived as “threats” to our national identity and security
- the destruction of scientific research, the teaching profession, and public education
- ideological extremism that attempts to manipulate us and enforce conformity with the government’s vision and “agenda”
- attempts to weaken the very institutions that were established to check an authoritarian’s dreams and fantasies of unfettered power
We citizens who wish to preserve American ideals must remain vigilant, or, at the very least, informed.
There was a time, in the late 1930s, when the people of Germany never imagined what they would become, nor how much they would suffer as a result. They never thought it could happen to them…until it did.
And yes, it can happen to us, too, if we don’t remain alert and challenge the cruel antics of a cruel government. Because, at a certain point, we or members of our families could easily become targets of that cruelty, if we haven’t already.
History has shown us that once cruelty takes root in a population, it can last for generations. I’m fighting, in the best way I know how, for my grandchildren and their children.

Deleitándose en la Crueldad

Desde principios de este año, escucho noticias de fuentes confiables y respetadas a diario. Desde principios de año, me pregunto a menudo por qué nuestro gobierno federal parece deleitarse con lo que parece ser una política de crueldad.
Consideren los siguientes problemas recientes:
- Los despidos masivos relámpago de empleados gubernamentales, tanto nuevos como experimentados.
- La toma hostil de centros culturales.
- El trato a los inmigrantes, tanto legales como ilegales.
- La flagrante discriminación contra quienes no se alinean con la agenda heterosexual, blanca y conservadora.
- La guerra contra las mujeres.
- La guerra contra la educación.
- La guerra contra la ciencia.
- ??La guerra contra la salud preventiva.
- La guerra contra el poder judicial de nuestro gobierno.
- La entusiasta invitación a poblaciones predominantemente blancas (pensemos en Noruega y Sudáfrica) mientras que, al mismo tiempo, se prohíbe la entrada de visitantes “racialmente indeseables”.
- El duro abandono de los afganos y kurdos sirios quienes lucharon con nosotros y nos apoyaron en la guerra contra los terroristas del ISIS.
Obviamente, podría dedicar media vida ampliando esta lista. Pero basta con decir que, actualmente, tenemos un gobierno que parece disfrutar de la crueldad y repartirla con regocijo. ¿Por qué nuestro gobierno, el que solía merecer respeto y gratitud en todo el mundo, daría un giro tan siniestro?
Existen varias razones creíbles para este cambio y el colapso total del idealismo estadounidense.
No es ningún secreto que nuestro actual gobierno federal alberga un deseo de autoritarismo a un nivel que haría sonrojar al propio Richard Nixon. Toda la crueldad que presenciamos día tras día tiene su trágico origen en este objetivo final. Hay muchos motivadores, todos ellos entrelazados y potenciados entre sí, para el cruel régimen que tenemos actualmente en el poder.
Una de las características de un régimen despiadado es la insistencia en que inflige crueldad para “proteger” a sus ciudadanos. Por ejemplo, se nos dice que se nos protege contra el “antisemitismo”, el “terrorismo”, las “amenazas a la seguridad” o la “ideología de izquierda radical”, cuando un análisis minucioso demuestra que estas afirmaciones son manifiestamente falsas o, al menos, muy exageradas. Impulsar una agenda cruel en nombre de la “protección” es una táctica común de los regímenes autoritarios.
La crueldad se utiliza a menudo cuando el gobierno desea preservar su poder a toda costa. Esta dureza despótica podría manifestarse, por ejemplo, como:
- nacionalismo y xenofobia
- deshumanización de los inmigrantes y la comunidad de género diverso
- corrupción (una faceta cada vez más evidente de nuestros líderes)
- búsqueda de chivos expiatorios
- la creación de drama para distraernos de las maniobras de prestidigitación que, en última instancia, nos despojan de nuestros derechos y riqueza
- falta de rendición de cuentas (¿por qué, si no, esta administración atacaría a los jueces como “matones no electos”?)
- explotación de recursos naturales (consideren nuestras amenazas a Groenlandia, Panamá, la gente de Gaza… ¡y Canadá, imagínense!)
- vigilancia (el equipo DOGE se centró especialmente en esta intrusión en nuestras vidas)
- paranoia, por la cual los inmigrantes son percibidos como “amenazas” para nuestra identidad y seguridad nacionales
- la destrucción de la investigación científica, la profesión docente y la educación pública
- extremismo ideológico que intenta manipularnos e imponer la conformidad con la visión y la “agenda” del gobierno
- intentos de debilitar las mismas instituciones que se establecieron para controlar los sueños y fantasías de un autoritario sobre un poder sin límites.
Los ciudadanos que deseamos preservar los ideales estadounidenses debemos permanecer vigilantes o, al menos, informados.
Hubo una época, a finales de la década de 1930, en que el pueblo alemán nunca imaginó en qué se convertiría ni cuánto sufriría como consecuencia. Nunca pensaron que les podría pasar…hasta que les pasó.
Y sí, también nos puede pasar a nosotros si no nos mantenemos alerta y desafiamos las crueles artimañas de un gobierno cruel. Porque, en cierto momento, nosotros o miembros de nuestras familias podríamos fácilmente convertirnos en blanco de esa crueldad, si no lo hemos sido ya.
La historia nos ha demostrado que una vez que la crueldad se arraiga en una población, puede perdurar durante generaciones. Lucho, de la mejor manera que sé, por mis nietos y sus hijos.
