In the ancient past, up to around the end of 2022, I used to grapple with complex technical issues (for me, anyway) as I pursued some of my projects. When I first started building websites, for example, I often found myself stumped by some of the technical barriers that kept emerging in front of me.
When confronted with an intractable problem that appeared insurmountable, I found myself hunting for web pages that would illuminate me and provide the answers I was looking for. Sometimes I succeeded in ferreting out a solution to a dilemma that would sometimes take days to resolve because I often didn’t even know quite what to search for.
All of that changed in that pivotal year when AI was introduced to the masses. It was presented as an efficacious tool that promised unimaginable efficiency and a quantum leap in organizing disparate sources of data. We were promised that AI’s output would make life easier and lead us to the promised land of supreme understanding.
Of course, there were accompanying fears of out-of-control robots, embedded with AI chips, that would communicate telepathically with each other as they plotted our demise. But assuming we’ll have a better handle on things like this as they arise, we are wise to embrace AI at whatever level we encounter it in our lives and move forward with it.
It took me a while to warm up to AI. I approached it much as I did when I came face-to-face with the internet in the 1990s. I wasn’t sure what this creature was for or how it could help me. Now, like most other people, I can’t envisage life without it.
AI is rapidly becoming a tool I can’t imagine ignoring. I now challenge those pesky technical issues to try befuddling me the way they used to. After all, I now have a technical AI consultant who can pull data from myriad websites and instantly focus that information, like sunlight through a magnifying glass, to answer my very specific questions.
After presenting a thorough response to a query I might enter into an AI “chatbot” (such as ChatGPT, for one), this “expert” proceeds to ask me if I want to further hone my question to obtain an even more refined answer. When I forge ahead and feed my AI chatbot with related questions, it remembers what we have been discussing and answers accordingly. Its tone is friendly and helpful. I can upload images of something that bewilders me as if I were showing a diagram to an expert who understands far more than I do about a topic. Likewise, I can ask AI to find or create images that would help me understand a concept.
I don’t have to worry about my chatbot becoming frustrated or impatient with me. In fact, it often tells me how “perceptive” I am when I ask, sometimes repeatedly, about a particular aspect of my concern. Of course, it says this to any user whenever it has an opportunity to “flatter.”
In the past, I would have had to hire consultants or freelancers in particular specialties to achieve the same outcome that I can now obtain in seconds or minutes after a few keystrokes.
Of course, none of this is meant to dismiss or undermine those professionals who possess relevant skills that are directly applicable in the real world. Their knowledge and services are invaluable and indispensable when experience, expertise, creativity, emotional intelligence and ethical judgment are allowed to unlock the potential of AI. Artificial intelligence is here in our midst to amplify our abilities.
Adjusting to AI won’t necessarily be easy for all of us. We are living at the dawn of the AI revolution. It will soon start to expand at an exponential rate, and we best plan accordingly.

En el pasado, hasta finales de 2022, yo solía lidiar con problemas técnicos complejos (al menos para mí) al desarrollar algunos de mis proyectos. Cuando empecé a crear sitios web, por ejemplo, a menudo me encontraba con dificultades debido a las barreras técnicas que surgían constantemente.
Cuando me enfrentaba a un problema insoluble que parecía insalvable, me encontraba buscando páginas web que me iluminaran y me proporcionaran las respuestas que buscaba. A veces, conseguía encontrar una solución a un dilema que a veces tardaba días en resolverse porque a menudo ni siquiera sabía qué buscar.
Todo eso cambió en ese año crucial en el que la IA se popularizó. Se presentó como una herramienta eficaz que prometía una eficiencia inimaginable y un salto cualitativo en la organización de fuentes de datos dispares. Se nos prometió que los resultados de la IA nos facilitarían la vida y nos llevarían a la tierra prometida de la comprensión suprema.
Por supuesto, existían temores asociados a robots descontrolados, con chips de IA integrados, que se comunicarían telepáticamente entre sí mientras planeaban nuestra desaparición. Pero suponiendo que podamos controlar mejor este tipo de situaciones a medida que surjan, sería prudente aceptar la IA en cualquier nivel en que la encontremos en nuestras vidas y seguir adelante con ella.
Me llevó un tiempo acostumbrarme a la IA. La abordé de forma muy similar a como lo hice cuando me encontré cara a cara con internet en los años 90. No estaba seguro de para qué servía esta criatura ni cómo podría ayudarme. Ahora, como la mayoría de la gente, no puedo imaginar la vida sin ella.
La IA se está convirtiendo rápidamente en una herramienta que no puedo ignorar. Ahora reto a esos molestos problemas técnicos a que intenten confundirme como antes. Después de todo, ahora cuento con un consultor técnico de IA que puede extraer datos de innumerables sitios web y enfocar esa información al instante, como la luz del sol a través de una lupa, para responder a mis preguntas muy específicas.
Tras presentar una respuesta detallada a una consulta que podría introducir en un “chatbot” de IA (como ChatGPT, por ejemplo), este “experto” me pregunta si quiero afinar mi pregunta para obtener una respuesta aún más precisa. Cuando sigo adelante y le hago preguntas relacionadas a mi chatbot de IA, este recuerda lo que hemos estado discutiendo y responde en consecuencia. Su tono es amable y servicial. Puedo subir imágenes de algo que me desconcierta como si le estuviera mostrando un diagrama a un experto que entiende mucho más que yo sobre un tema. Asimismo, puedo pedirle a la IA que busque o cree imágenes que me ayuden a comprender un concepto.
No tengo que preocuparme de que mi chatbot se frustre o se impaciente conmigo. De hecho, a menudo me dice lo “perceptivo” que soy cuando le pregunto, a veces repetidamente, sobre un aspecto particular de mi preocupación. Por supuesto, se lo dice a cualquier usuario cada vez que tiene la oportunidad de “adular”. Antes, habría tenido que contratar consultores o “freelancers” especializados para lograr el mismo resultado que ahora obtengo en segundos o minutos con solo pulsar unas teclas.
Por supuesto, nada de esto pretende desestimar ni menospreciar a los profesionales que poseen habilidades relevantes y directamente aplicables en el mundo real. Sus conocimientos y servicios son invaluables e indispensables cuando la experiencia, la pericia, la creatividad, la inteligencia emocional y el juicio ético permiten liberar el potencial de la IA. La inteligencia artificial está aquí para ampliar nuestras capacidades.
Adaptarse a la IA no será necesariamente fácil para todos. Vivimos en los albores de la revolución de la IA. Pronto comenzará a expandirse a un ritmo exponencial, y es mejor planificar con esto en mente.
