Ballet Folklórico Mestizo event on May 6-7 to open Oxnard College Performing Arts Center

Oxnard College will celebrate the opening of its new theater when Ballet Folklórico Mestizo performs at 7 p.m. Friday, May 6 and 7 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at the Oxnard College Performing Arts Center, 4000 So. Rose Ave., Oxnard.

Under the direction of Oxnard College English Professor Matilde “Mati” Sanchez, the Ballet Folklórico Mestizo celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The inaugural celebration and historical event will begin with a pre-performance reception, to be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Friday, May 6, and on Saturday, May 7 at the center’s Black Box Theatre.

The event features live music from Mariachi Águilas de México on Friday and Mariachi Estrellas de Jalisco on Saturday.

“Colorful and authentic costuming, intricate choreography, and lively toe-tapping, captivating music await concertgoers as this 25-member strong dance troupe, comprised of OC students, alumni, faculty and staff, performs various regions of Mexico,” Sanchez stated in a media release. “While unique to the Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD), the Ballet Folklórico Mestizo, are considered Ambassadors of Oxnard College.  They have performed at various community events and schools throughout Ventura County in an effort to develop an appreciation for the performing arts.”
