Aug. 27 — Cult Classic Kung Fu fuses with Hip Hop at OPAC

OXNARD — Washington DC’s legendary DJ duo, Shaolin Jazz, are making their West Coast debut this summer as part of their “Can I Kick It?” series, which scores live hip hop, soul, and funk music to cult classic kung fu films. The Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation (OPAC) is proud to bring “Can I Kick It?” to Ventura County audiences as part of an end-of-summer celebration. The event will be held on Saturday, August 27 from 6-10 pm at Hobson Park East (also known as Lion’s Park), just behind OPAC, and will feature a free outdoor moving screening of the 1973 hit film Enter the Dragon, food trucks, vendors, a beer garden, martial arts demonstrations, and cyphers, hip hop lyrical and dance battles and performances.

Starring Bruce Lee, Enter the Dragon (1973) is considered one of the best martial arts films of all time. The movie premiered one month after Bruce Lee’s untimely death and was his last fully completed film. The film has been preserved by the United States National Film Registry for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance and has influenced a wide range of industries (anime, manga, MMA) and cultural creatives (Quentin Tarantino, Wu-Tang Clan). And it revolutionized the way cinema portrayed African-Americans, Asians, and traditional martial arts.

“Can I Kick It?” also serves as a lead-up to OPAC’s Sight + Sound Film Festival which will be held Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, 2022, in different venues across the City of Oxnard. Learn more: sightplussound.com.
