UCSB Arts & Lectures presents the most decorated track and field Olympian in History, Allyson Felix, on Advocacy and Equality in Sports and in Life on Tuesday, April 6th at 5 p.m. Pacific. Felix is a nine-time Olympic medalist, six-time Olympic champion, world record holder and one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020. An outspoken critic of pregnancy discrimination in athletics, an advocate for underserved children and a proponent of maternity rights, Felix shares her experiences with racism and discrimination even as a professional athlete. As she gears up for the Tokyo Olympics, Felix remains at the forefront of the fight for equality for all – in sports and in life.
This conversation with Dr. Ingrid Banks, Chair of the UC Santa Barbara Department of Black Studies, will be followed by a Q&A.

ABOUT
ALLYSON FELIX
Having stepped on the world stage as a passionate 18-year-old in her first Olympic Games, Allyson Felix has redefined athletics as she continues to cement her iconic status on and off the track.
Felix grew up in Los Angeles, California. She never expected that she would find one of her passions on a high school track, but she did and has never looked back – amassing an incredible 13 global titles, ten United States Championships, nine Olympic medals and a world record. Her accomplishments solidify her as one of the greatest female athletes the world has seen and has garnered attention from top media publications including Vogue, Glamour, Essence, Self, O Magazine, Sports Illustrated and Elle.
Felix has proven herself a force on the track, but has still made time to graduate with an elementary education degree from the University of Southern California. She has a heart for her community, and serves as an ambassador for Right to Play and Play Works and a former member of The President’s Council on Fitness, Sport and Nutrition. Felix has helped the NFL’s Nnamdi Asomugha provide Los Angeles area teens with tools to prepare themselves for higher education through the ACTS College Summit. Her determination is also carrying over to the business sector, where she is an investor in a plant-based protein bar company and serves as an advisor to a fitness technology startup.
INGRID BANKS
Ingrid Banks is an associate professor and chair in the Department of Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She received her Ph.D. in Comparative Ethnic Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of Hair Matters: Beauty, Power, and Black Women’s Consciousness and is currently preparing a book manuscript based on a fourteen-month, multi-city, ethnographic study that examines contemporary black beauty salon culture. In 2004-05 and 2008-09, Banks was a visiting scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation in New York City. Her commentary on beauty culture has been cited in media outlets including The New York Times, The Guardian (U.K.), CNN.com, BBC and other media outlets.

Arts & Lectures has a history of bringing complex issues to the forefront. Now, we are spearheading an in-depth look at systemic racism from every angle, including abolition, underlying conditions, reparations, criminal justice and more. Interdisciplinary and cross-departmental, this season-long series engages leading activists, creatives and thinkers to expand our understanding of racism and how race impacts society and to inspire an expansive approach to advancing racial equality.
