SANTA PAULA — “Angels on Harps,” a small group of students from Oxnard led by Xavier ‘Big X’ Montes, will perform as part of the Santa Paula Art Museum’s Strings Program at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 21 at 117 No. 10th St., Santa Paula.
The Strings Program was established at the Santa Paula Art Museum in 2012 to encourage an appreciation of the art of music among local youth. The group is under the director of Santa Paula native Montes, an accomplished guitarist, harpist and artist. This year, he has introduced his guitar students to the songs, styles and techniques of the Ranchera, Bolero and Jarocho, which are all part of what is known as Mexican Folk.
The talented young ensemble will share what they have learned as participants in the program as they perform traditional Mexican folk tunes.
Montes, who also teaches in Oxnard on Saturday mornings, plans to eventually start up a group of Angels on Harps in Santa Paula. In addition to the Angels on Harps, Montes’ guitar students will accompany Donna Nelson and her Isbell Middle School Choir on a few American folk songs.
Admission is $5 for everyone and free for students. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Strings Program. Light refreshments will be served. No reservations are necessary.
The museum’s regular hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Call 805-525-5554, or email info@santapaulaartmuseum.org for more information.
