OXNARD — Sail across the centuries and be part of history as the full-scale replica of the first European vessel to explore California’s coastline. This fall Cabrillo’s San Salvador: The Pacific Heritage Tour will make another port stop along the West Coast, offering a variety of onshore exhibits and seagoing adventures for all ages. The Pacific Heritage Tour created by Maritime Museum of San Diego built and added San Salvador to the Museum fleet in 2015. The Museum, with an international reputation for excellence in restoring, maintaining and operating historic vessels, will again sail San Salvador to Channel Islands Maritime Museum located in Oxnard, California.

Channel Islands Maritime Museum Executive Director, Peter Crabbe, EdD states “the inaugural year of the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s Pacific Tour and San Salvador visit to Channel Islands Maritime Museum was an enormous success. We are looking forward to the ship’s return and excited about the new addition of day sailing experiences that we may offer to visitors.”

Since 2016, Maritime Museum of San Diego has sailed the California Coastline visiting Oxnard, Monterey, Morro Bay, Santa Barbara, San Pedro, the Channel Islands and Ensenada, Mexico.

San Salvador is a full-scale replica of the flagship used by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 during the first European voyage to explore what would one day become the West Coast of the United States. Meticulously constructed by the Maritime Museum of San Diego over six years and US Coast Guard Certified, San Salvador is one of very few early modern replica ships in which members of the public can glimpse through experience what seafaring beyond the known world was like half a millennia ago.
Channel Islands Maritime Museum will offer different planned events and immersive exhibits during San Salvador’s visit to Oxnard including:

  • Open to the public for dockside viewing and tours: Friday, August 30 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.  Saturday, August 31 – Monday, September 2, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Educational Field Trips: Friday, August 30 (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
  • Educator’s Open House, Friday, August 30, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
  • Day Sails: Tuesday, September 3 and 4; 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

San Salvador dockside Port visits will give the visitors a firsthand look at the historical replica of the 1542 galleon San Salvador, the flagship for the Explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Guest will learn of San Salvador’s mission and about the people encountered along the California Pacific Coast. Stepping onboard, visitors will be immersed in the year of 1542 as they wander on deck as though the crew left a few minutes earlier.
