Teatro de las Américas is presenting the play “La zapatera prodigiosa / The Shoemaker’s Prodigious Wife,” in April and May.
“We invite artists to submit artwork that will serve as the art or graphic for posters and program of the play,” Margaret Cortese, executive director of Teatro de las Americas, stated in a media release. “It must be possible to reproduce the art in digital form for its inclusion in posters. There is a $100 prize for the winning entry. The art will be judged by the play’s director and the members of Teatro’s publicity committee. Entries are due on March 2, 2012. The winner will be notified on March 9, 2012.”

The Shoemaker’s Prodigious Wife (Zapatera) is a young woman married to her husband for convenience, so her attitude toward the cobbler is not tender. At first she speaks of her husband scornfully and says she is not in love with him, because the marriage was arranged by others. She dreams of impossible loves.
In town, people, especially the women neighbors, speak ill of the young woman, and therefore she has a very bad reputation; the neighbors sing contemptuous songs; she feels alone and she only has a great affection for the Boy, the play opens with her gift of a doll to him.
The Shoemaker is unhappy, he married the Zapatera at age fifty and had had no wife before; he is a good and peaceful man, is kind to his wife although he is carried away by the views of others; and he is very generous to everyone.
The play closes the first act with the news of the departure of her husband. The Boy talks to the Zapatera and tells her that her husband is gone (because of all the gossip in town.)
The Zapatera has to survive working at the tavern. The village Mayor keeps stirring things up and speaks sarcastically about the Zapatera. This character has been married four times and flirts and propositions her.
The Boy is the only person in town who gets along with the Zapatera, as she cannot have children of their own, she treats him like a son.
Time passes and one day a puppeteer arrives in the village telling stories and entertaining people. This character is the husband in disguise. When he talk to the Zapatera, he realizes that she loves him and misses him.
In the meantime, two men are fighting in the town square and all the neighbors say it is because of the Zapatera. these young men are knifed, and all voices accuse the Zapatera as the cause of the fight.
The shoemaker, posing as puppeteer, discovers how much he loves his wife and apologizes for leaving her. Eventually the couple openly declares their love and the author ends the play with the singing of songs and ringing of bells.

Teatro de las Américas presenta la obra “La zapatera prodigiosa” en mayo.
“Los invitamos a artistas crear arte que sirva como el arte o el gráfico de los rótulos y el programa de la obra”, Margaret Cortese, director ejecutivo del Teatro de las Américas, declaró en un comunicado de prensa. “Se tiene que poder reproducir el arte en forma digital para incluirlo en los rótulos de la promoción. Hay premio de $100 para el ganador. El arte lo juzgará la directora de la obra y los miembros del comité de publicidad del Teatro. La fecha tope es el 9 marzo, 2012. Se le notifica al ganador el 16 marzo, 2012”.

Aquí sigue un resumen de la obra:
La zapatera prodigiosa trata de una mujer joven casada con su marido por conveniencia, por eso su actitud hacia el zapatero no es de ternura. Al principio habla de su marido con despecho y dice no estar enamorada del él, ya que el matrimonio lo decidieron terceras personas. La Zapatera sueña amores imposibles.
En el pueblo, la gente habla mal de esta joven sobre todo las vecinas y por tanto La Zapatera tiene muy mala fama, la cantan coplas con desprecio, ella se siente sola y sólo tiene un gran cariño a El Niño, que abre su actuación en la obra recibiendo el regalo de un muñequito.
El Zapatero es infeliz, se casó con la Zapatera a los cincuenta años y no había tenido ninguna esposa antes, es un hombre bueno y pacifico, trata bien a su mujer aunque se deja llevar por la opinión de los demás y es bastante generoso con todo el mundo.
La obra cierra el primer acto con la noticia de la marcha del marido. El Niño habla con la Zapatera y le cuenta que su marido se ha ido (por culpa de todo lo que dicen de ella en el pueblo.)
La Zapatera tiene que salir adelante trabajando en la taberna. El Alcalde del pueblo sigue malmetíendo y hablando con sorna de la zapatera . Este personaje ha estado casado cuatro veces y le tira piropos y proposiciones a la joven.
El Niño es con la única persona del pueblo con que se lleva bien la zapatera, como ella no puede tener hijos propios, le trata como si fuera hijo suyo.
Pasa el tiempo y un día aparece en el pueblo un titiritero contando historias y entreteniendo a las gentes. Este personaje es el marido disfrazado que al hablar con la zapatera se da cuenta de que le quiere y le hecha de menos.
Mientras tanto en la plaza del pueblo se pelean dos hombres y todas las vecinas dicen que es por culpa de la zapatera. estos Mozos quedan heridos por una navaja y todas las voces acusan a la mujer del zapatero de la grave pelea.
El zapatero haciéndose pasar por titiritero extranjero, descubre lo mucho que quiere a su mujer y la pide perdón por haberla abandonado. Al final el matrimonio se declaran abiertamente su amor y el autor acaba la obra con un cantar de coplas y el repicar de las campanas.
