Lecture: “A Brief History of the Origins of Chinese Characters” with Hiroko Yoshimoto

Acclaimed Ventura artist and retired Ventura College art professor Hiroko Yoshimoto invites you to her free lecture on the history of Chinese characters from the Han period and how they derived from pictographs. The lecture will be hosted inside the Santa Paula Art Museum’s Cole Creativity Center (123 N 10th Street). Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ventura artist Hiroko Yoshimoto was born and raised in Japan and moved to Los Angeles as a teen. She has BA and MA degrees in art from UCLA. Hiroko taught studio art at Ventura College as a full-time professor for over 35 years, and at the same time worked as an exhibiting artist. In addition to SoCal, Yoshimoto has exhibited in New York, Tokyo, Osaka, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston, and more.

Get to know Ojai author-turned-artist Christopher Noxon as he discusses his current exhibit, “Greenbelt: Interplay and Imagination on the Edge of Wildness.” Learn more about Noxon’s evolution from writer to painter, and how Santa Paula inspired his very first solo exhibition of paintings.

“Greenbelt” is on view now through September 8, 2024.

Ojai artist Christopher Noxon began painting seriously in midlife after raising kids and working as a journalist and illustrator in Los Angeles. His writing and illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, New York Times Magazine, and several of his own books. Noxon’s work has been exhibited by Sullivan Goss Gallery, Ojai Valley Museum, Beatrice Woods Center for the Arts, and others.
