Community urged to attend VCCCD meeting on Jan. 17 to avert cuts at college district

The community is urged to attend the Ventura County Community College District meeting on Tuesday Jan. 17 to voice its opposition to proposed cuts to college educational programs at Oxnard, Ventura and Moorpark.

The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ventura High School Auditorium, 2 No. Catalina St., Ventura.

“The (Ventura County Community College District) Trustees are preparing to cut vital programs at Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura College,” the League of United Latin American Citizens stated in a media release. “Join us and make a united stand against these devastating cuts.”

LULAC charges that the cuts will cause:

– Limited access to educational, vocational, and athletic programs.
– Increased travel time and transportation costs causing students of color to go greater distances for athletic,               vocational, and educational programs.
– Higher unemployment rates among racial and ethnic staff/faculty.
– Disproportionate dropout rates for primarily ethnic students.
– Systemic and unjust distribution of critical resources.
– African American, Latino, and other students of color cannot achieve their full potential.
– Lowered quality of campus life for students of color.
– Enhances the disadvantages among underserved populations because of their historical social position and       other circumstances.
– Perceived racism and other forms of discrimination.
