Black History Month offers opportunities to uplift, support BIPOC community on campus

February is Black History Month, and as such, the Centers for Equity and Social Justice (Umoja, Dream, CESJ, and BNC) have offered a variety of events designed to educate, support and uplift BIPOC students and their families. On Feb. 9, the lead artist on the Umoja mural and director of the Bay Area Mural Program (BAMP), André Jones, visited the CESJ center and spoke to students and staff about BAMP, the history of murals, and the ideas behind the Umoja mural at SBCC. On Feb. 15-16, SBCC’s equity and ESL programs hosted BIPOC Maternal Health and Family Days, featuring
a film screening the movie “Born Free” followed by a maternal health panel, a “father’s circle” presentation, and art projects hosted by local art organization Art from Scrap, among many other activities.

Mid-January Storm: Facilities crews go the extra mile after severe weather hits all three campuses

Major effects of severe weather, including a significant storm on Jan. 9 and 10, had SBCC’s Business Services and Facilities teams going the extra mile to clear the campus and make affected areas safe for staff and students. Click here for the story.

Scholarship application period now underway

Students interested in applying for general, cross-discipline, and department scholarships at SBCC are encouraged to apply by the March 3, 2023, deadline. The SBCC Financial Aid office’s 2023-2024 Scholarship Opportunities Booklet is now available.
Anyone wanting to contribute to scholarship funding may do so through the SBCC Foundation donation form.

Elizabeth Imhof receives ‘Progress in Diversity Award’ from ACCCA

The Association of Calif. Community College Administrators (ACCCA) Board of Directors recently selected SBCC Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Science Elizabeth Imhof as the 2023 recipient of its Award for Progress in Diversity. Award criteria includes showing clear evidence of possessing a history of effective leadership in promoting diversity. In addition, developing innovative district programs to ensure that curriculum and structure is grounded in diversity concepts that work to the benefit and inclusion of diverse groups of students, staff and faculty, was also considered. The award will be presented at the ACCCA Annual Conference in Rancho Mirage, Calif., Feb. 22-24. Congratulations, Elizabeth!

Patricia Mautone awarded Faculty of the Year by FACCC

Adult High School Program and GED instructor Patricia (Tricia) Mautone was recently recognized by the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges as winner of the 2023 Faculty of the Year award, the single awardee from the state. Tricia will receive the award at the FACCC Advocacy & Policy Conference in Sacramento, Calif., March 19-20. Congratulations, Tricia!

Joshua Escobar awarded the Bo Huston Prize

SBCC director Creative Writing, Activities Director, RISE Peer Tutor+Mentor Project, and Editor of Open Fruit, Joshua Escobar, was recently awarded the 2023 Bo Huston Prize for his works, Califorkya Voltage, XXOX FM and Bareback Nightfall. Joshua was awarded $2,000 and editorial support for one year leading to publication of an original book. The award is given annually to honor Bo Huston (1959-1993), author of four books, including The Dream Life.

SBCC Dream Center advisor was an SBCC Promise student

Did you know that Dream Center Student Program Advisor Leslie Marin Juarez was an SBCC Promise student? One of the first students to take advantage of The Promise back in 2016, Leslie is now advocating for undocumented students much like herself. The SBCC Promise removes financial barriers, making “our community’s college” fully accessible to all local students. Watch the SBCC Promise Youtube video on Leslie here. 

SBCC alum Sonia Águila-González receives bilingual Teacher of the Year award

Canalino Elementary School teacher and SBCC alum Sonia Águila-González has received the prestigious NABE Bilingual Teacher of the Year award, after having won CABE Teacher of the Year in 2022. Read the Noozhawk article for details. Felicidades, Sonia!

Spring Break

Classes will pause March 27-31 for Spring Break. Administrative offices will be open during this week.
Atkinson Gallery Current Exhibit: Small Images, 38th Anniversary Exhibition, featuring works submitted by local artists no larger than 18 x 18 inches Feb. 15-March 17 at the Atkinson Gallery on SBCC’s East Campus. Info at the Atkinson Gallery website.
SBCC Music: Make a resolution to support SBCC Music programs by attending a Spring semester concert or two. Check out the scheduled events here.
SBCC Scheinfeld Center: The next “Passion Project Pour Hour” is this Friday, Feb. 24. Learn all about the Spring 2023 Passion Project Challenge, created for the campus community to kindle passions, gain in-demand skills, and connect with our SBCC community in a new, fun and meaningful way.
SBCC Gourmet Dining Room: The GDR will be open open for dinner on Thursday and Friday evenings during the Spring semester, with students from the School of Culinary Arts serving up the delicacies.
