ARTS
October 2022 | Vol. 3, No. 2
Greetings! Fall is in full swing and next month brings Election Day. Have you heard about Proposition 28 and arts education funding in California schools? We’ve provided an overview below if you’d like to learn more about its potential impact.
Speaking of arts education funding, we hope you’ll take a moment to watch the video below about The Children’s Workshop, an Oxnard nonprofit led by Armando Lopez, that has generously provided support to our Artists in the Classroom program. They are an awesome example of how funding for arts education comes not only from state budgets, but also from people in our community who care about local students.

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT:
The Children’s Workshop Helps Provide Artists in the Classroom in Oxnard & Port Hueneme
We are delighted to share a new video featuring longtime Oxnard resident, philanthropist and business owner Armando J. Lopez, who is president of the Oxnard-based nonprofit, The Children’s Workshop, and Daisy Tatum, a member of its board and a retired Oxnard school principal. Through Armando’s leadership, our Artists in the Classroomprogram has received funds raised by The Children’s Workshop that have enabled us to provide several offset grants to elementary schools in Oxnard and Hueneme districts to lower their cost to bring our 8-week arts residencies to their classrooms. We’re very grateful to Armando, Daisy and the entire board of The Children’s Workshop for their generosity.

POLICY CORNER: Understanding Prop 28 and Its Impact on Arts & Music Education
November 8 is Election Day, and this year Californians will decide on Proposition 28, which would provide additional funding from the state General Fund for arts and music education in all K–12 public schools, including charter schools. Prop. 28 would help to ensure our students have access to arts instruction, and it would be especially impactful in improving equity for students at schools that serve low-income families. Prop. 28 would not raise taxes, and it is supported by a broad coalition of teachers, artists, arts orgs and community leaders. You can read more about Prop. 28 at California’s Official Voter Information Guide, or at CalMatters, a nonpartisan and nonprofit news organization focused on California government transparency and accountability. You can also check out CalMatters’ 1-minute Prop.28 explainer video below.
