SANTA PAULA — As husband and wife, Ventura artists John Robertson and Lynn Hanson are accustomed to sharing a studio and working alongside one another. Soon the two will share a major exhibition space with concurrent exhibitions at the Santa Paula Art Museum. “Fieldnotes: Lynn Hanson” and “A Narrative: John Robertson” will premiere Saturday, March 12, 2022, with an opening reception from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission to the reception is free for everyone. Some of the artworks will be for sale. “Fieldnotes” and “A Narrative” will be on view March 12, 2022, to July 10, 2022.

Hanson and Robertson are a generous and down-to-earth pair who share a deep-rooted love for art and nature. As artists, their styles, subject matter, and methods are delightfully different; their works recall each other in only the subtlest of ways. Hanson’s “Fieldnotes” is a carefully composed exhibition of drawings and paintings that spans three decades of her observations along the California coast. (The artist makes a daily ritual of exploring the beaches and canyons near her Ventura home.) Lynn’s subject matter carries an undercurrent of longing: gray painted seascapes; drawings of native wildlife on vintage maps; stark images of discarded rope, wrack and bramble. LACMA was so moved by Hanson’s work that it acquired her piece “the long way home” for its permanent collection in 2017.

Robertson’s exhibit, “A Narrative,” is a biographical collection of drawings, paintings, assemblages, and videos from his three decades as a self-taught artist with a dogged daily practice. The artist is well-known for his paintings of athletic figures for major sports arenas, including the Green Bay Packers’ Lambeau Field, and the San Francisco 49ers’ Levi Stadium. John’s style is expressive, often with a street art quality. His more personal, narrative works include large and small landscapes on unstretched canvas; assemblages incorporating found objects like toys and wooden alphabet blocks; and his more recent foray into abstract art. Robertson and Hanson’s exhibitions will be presented side by side, offering a fascinating look at the couple’s independent bodies of work.
