SBCC welcomes students to campus for Fall term
The Fall 2021 semester began on Aug. 23, providing students with several options for instruction: online, hybrid and in-person classes. While the on-campus experience is a bit different than it was prior to the pandemic, teaching and learning and the delivery of vital support services continues.
In an effort to keep students, faculty and staff safe, certain protocols have been established, including a requirement that all those wishing to enter a college building and/or attend in-person classes must be fully vaccinated by Oct. 1.

Santa Barbara Ecological and Garden Project wins 2021 Golden Leaf Award
Earlier this year, The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the Santa Barbara City College Foundation a sizable grant for a project to connect students and residents to a network of edible gardens and foster a connection to local ecosystems. That project, called the Santa Barbara Ecological and Edible (SBEE) Garden Project, has recently received a 2021 Golden Leaf Award from Santa Barbara Beautiful.
A collaborative effort, the SBEE Garden Project brings together SBCC faculty and students, elementary school students and their families, researchers, educators, garden enthusiasts and the community as a whole. Among the award recipients are Adam Green, SBCC professor of biology and environmental studies; Daniel Parra Hensel, SBCC instructor of environmental horticulture; and Rachel Johnson, chief program officer, Santa Barbara City College Foundation.

Dr. Kindred Murillo named Interim President/ Superintendent

At their meeting on Aug. 26, the SBCC Board of Trustees announced that Dr. Kindred Murillo had been selected to serve as Interim Superintendent/President of SBCC for 2021-22. Board president Dr. Peter Haslund praised Murillo as someone who models “collaborative engagement in the decision-making process.” Dr. Murillo began service September 7. Jerry Hannula named SBCC Interim Athletic Director

We are pleased to welcome Jerry Hannula, who has been selected to serve as Interim Athletic Director. Jerry brings to SBCC 33 years of experience working in community college athletics, which included stops at El Camino and Cuesta colleges before spending the past 29 years at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif, where he was the assistant athletic director for 15 years before retiring in May of 2020. Read more about Jerry…

The Channels editorial board shares their thoughts and expectations for Fall semester

Students who make up the staff at The Channels, SBCC’s award-winning online student newspaper, are back on campus in-person for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an article published Sept. 3, the members of the editorial staff shared their thoughts and expectations about returning to the newsroom and getting to  work in-person again within the SBCC community. SBCC’s Atkinson Gallery to present group exhibition ‘Planet Earth’ Sept. 10-Oct. 23

The Atkinson Gallery is pleased to present “Planet Earth,” a group exhibition of three artists who integrate different concepts of land in their work: Sarah Rosalena Brady, Mark Churchill and Vanessa Wallace-Gonzales. The word “land” can have many implications as a noun and a verb.

The Theatre Group launches the new season with a comedy

The Theatre Group at Santa Barbara City College will start the season with “Ripcord” by David Lindsay-Abaire, a “deeply satisfying and vastly entertaining story of two elderly women thrown together by a comic cosmic force possessed of a wicked sense of humor.” Performances run Oct. 13-30, in the Garvin Theatre. Tickets are now on sale.

CC | IN MEMORIAM

John O’Dea 1923-2021

John O’Dea, professor in SBCC’s Business Department from 1952-1985, passed away on July 1, 2021, surrounded by family and CareTeam members who provided comfort, joy and companionship during the past eight years at home. In 2014, a video of John recalling his years at SBCC was recorded for the SBCC Legacy Project.
