Tour de Dreams comes to CSU Channel Islands on Aug. 19

Dreamers without borders will host the Tour de Dreams with a potluck BBQ, discussion, live DJ and Dance at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19 at CSU Channel Islands at the Student Union Treehouse Courtyard.

The Tour de Dreams will be visiting the university during its 10-day, 540-mile trek from UC Berkeley to UCLA to raise funds for scholarships for undocumented students and draw support for the the California Dream Act, AB130 and AB131, which provides in-state tuition and full rights to financial aid to all students.

“On behalf of Dreamers Without Borders/ CLUE-VC (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice — Ventura County), and CSU Channel Islands Student Government we would like to invite you to the first non official event on campus at the Student Union Tree house Courtyard,” Anahi Quiroz, Alumni and Outreach Counselor at CSU Channel Islands, reported in a media release. “On August 19th, 2011 we will be welcoming the 3rd Annual Tour de Dreams bike riders on their tenth day of the bike ride. The bike ride is more than just a simple bike ride, the students ride their bikes as a form of organized political action in support of the Dream Act. The students visiting the campus will be a total of 40 students. We have also invited people from the community to meet the students, enjoy food with them, but also to witness a moderated discussion between the Tour de Dreams and local students about current immigration issues and access to higher education for all CA students. The discussion will be related to questions like : “Where do we come from? Where are we going? Why are we here?” These questions will be addressed as they relate to our dreams for our futures, and other questions too.

“At the end, we will have a DJ, and we will have a little bit of dancing (I say a little bit because some people don’t think the bike riders will have any energy for dancing, but I know they will). We will celebrate the long journey the Tour de Dreams have had, but also our accomplishments and what we hope for next school’s year.

“This is a very important event for the community, we will be able to open up the dialogue about issues that affect our everyday lives and families. As immigrants, we want the same thing that US citizens want; which is a world that is more fair, more equal, and where every child can get the highest education they can achieve.”

Parking at the university is $6. Send an email to anahi.quiroz382@myci.csuci.edu for more information.
