SANTA BARBARA – Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) has adjusted to the new realities that come with COVID-19 by creating their illuminate Speaker Series – a series that started last year which not only addresses aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic but also offers help on how to navigate through this new reality.
One way the organization is transitioning to serve is to provide helpful resources to our community and beyond as they relate to COVID-19 through this virtual series that features a new world-renowned speaker every month. Past speakers include Roshi Joan Halifax, Frank Ostaseski, Katy Butler, Sharon Salzberg, Dr. BJ Miller, and Dr. Sunita Puri.
Next up on the illuminate Speaker Series line-up is Jenée Johnson, who will present Joy and Pain: The Art of Flourishing in Unprecedented Times on Wednesday, May 19th at 6:00 PM PDT. The event is free, but registration is required.
During her webinar, she will teach attendees how to use nourishing mindfulness and HeartMath practices to cultivate equanimity–the chamber of steadiness where all possibility is held in balance, especially under stress. She will also share ways to create an inner pause and pave the way to more joy in life with lovingkindness, compassion and heart coherence.
Jenée Johnson is a program innovation leader, mindfulness, trauma and racial healing pioneer who leads the unique effort to bring mindfulness into public health practices and programs through the Trauma Informed Systems of Care Initiative in San Francisco. Her goal is to improve the organization’s ability to manage change, stay resilient, inspire growth and become a mindful culture that leads and serves with compassion.
“The illuminate Speaker Series was established to address many of the struggles we face that have been heightened this past year,” said David Selberg, CEO of Hospice of Santa Barbara. “As we get through the pandemic, it is important we learn how to flourish in unprecedented times and Jenée Johnson’s webinar will give us just that.”
As we all know, people are reeling from this world-wide crisis emotionally, socially, and economically. People have shared a variety of intense feelings they are experiencing during this time, among them: fear, deep sadness, anxiety, grief, uncertainty over the present and what the future holds, vulnerability, despair, anger, hopelessness. HSB will have a new nationally-known speaker every month.
The series continues through 2021 with Daniel Goleman in June, NoraMcInerny in July, and Pico Iyer in August. Hospice of Santa Barbara would like to give a special thanks to Natalie Orfalea Foundation and Lou Buglioli, Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, and Santa Barbara Foundation for sponsoring this event.
