“Making your voice heard is just one part of change – acting on your beliefs is also vital for getting things done.”

 – José Andrés

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents chef, restaurateur and humanitarian José Andrés for Changing the World Through the Power of Food in Conversation with Catherine Remak, career broadcaster and co-host of Mornings with Gary and Catherine on Sunday, March 14 at 5 p.m. Pacific.

A two-star Michelin chef with an award-winning group of restaurants, several cookbooks and whose Spanish-inspired food popularized tapas-style small plates in the U.S., José Andrés is not resting on his laurels. Through his nonprofit World Central Kitchen, the award-winning chef has responded to an earthquake-devastated Haiti, Hurricane Maria-ravaged Puerto Rico, a refugee crisis on the Venezuelan border and right here in wildfire-scorched Southern California, quickly mobilizing volunteer chefs to prepare fresh, nourishing meals for thousands of people in need. During the coronavirus pandemic, Andrés led the charge to provide food relief to the elderly, those suddenly without work and frontline health care and essential workers.

This conversation with Catherine Remak, career broadcaster and co-host ofMornings with Gary and Catherine, will be followed by a Q&A.

A pioneer of Spanish tapas in the United States,  Andrés is also known for his groundbreaking avant-garde cuisine and his award-winning group of nearly three dozen restaurants located throughout the country and beyond. ThinkFoodGroup’s concepts include the two Michelin-starred minibar by José Andrés in Washington, D.C., and the two Michelin-starred Somni in Beverly Hills, the acclaimed NYC food hall Mercado Little Spain and multiple locations of The Bazaar by José Andrés. He has received the James Beard Foundation’s “Outstanding Chef” and “Humanitarian of the Year” awards.

Andrés is a committed advocate of food and hunger issues and is known for championing the role of chefs in the national debate on food policy. In 2010,  he formed World Central Kitchen (WCK), a non-profit specializing in delivering food relief in the wake of natural and humanitarian disasters. Since serving nearly 4 million meals to the people of Puerto Rico following the devastation of Hurricane Maria, WCK has responded to dozens of disasters worldwide and distributed tens of millions of meals in the process. A naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Spain, Andrés has been a tireless advocate for immigration reform and on July 4, 2014 was named by President Barack Obama as that year’s “Outstanding American by Choice.”

In 2015, President Obama awarded Andrés the National Humanities Medal “for cultivating our palettes and shaping our culture.”

“We [chefs] feed the few,” Andrés responded to the honor, “but we have the opportunity to change the world.”

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, WCK has partnered with restaurants, small farms and community leaders around the country to combat food insecurity. Most recently, WCK’s Relief Team responded to the massive power outages in Texas, activating restaurant partners who prepared meals in response to the pandemic over the past year. Teams on the ground served comforting meals in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth and Dallas, ultimately serving tens of thousands of meals to residents across the state.
