In preparation for the California Redistricting Commission public hearing, a redistricting workshop will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18 at Driffill Elementary School, 910 So. E St., Oxnard.
The commission has submitted an initial proposal that would split Oxnard — the largest Latino population center in Ventura County — into two Assembly Districts. Half of Oxnard’s residents, as well as Santa Paula and Fillmore, would be split and go into Simi Valley’s 37th Assembly District, opponents reported.
As a result, a diverse group of community, labor organizations and individuals have joined in opposition of the proposal. They include the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE), the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Multicultural Community Ventures Coalition, Susan Haverland of Agricultural Industries Transportation Services, Tony Skinner of the Tri-Counties Building & Construction Trades Council & IBEW Local 952, and Vanessa Frank-Garcia, board chair of VC Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice (VC CLUE).
“Diverse Community and Labor groups have joined to present a collective voice for Ventura County Assembly, Senate and Congressional districts that fairly represent working families, Latino & African American minority voters, seniors, youth and immigrants for the next 10 years,” the organizations reported in a media release. “On behalf of Ventura County working families and people of color, we need a minimum of 30 people to present a two-minute prepared public testimony statement that includes our consensus recommendations for Ventura County districts at the California Redistricting Commission public hearing at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22 at the Oxnard College Performing Arts Center, 4000 So. Rose Ave.”
Please confirm your attendance at this Saturday’s workshop to prepare for the public hearing. If you cannot attend please confirm the attendance of two people in your place, the group reported.
