The family ensemble Los Utrera brings their interpretations of son jarocho traditions to Santa Barbara as part of the 15thanniversary season of ¡Viva el Arte de Santa Bárbara! Los Utrera will recreate southern Veracruz’s traditional fandango, a community celebration featuring music and rhythmic dancing around the tarima. Son Jarocho came about through the meeting of three worlds – Spanish, African and Indigenous – and is an important part of the popular culture of Veracruz in both cities and rural communities. Today, Son Jarocho and the Fandango are the result of a cultural exchange that has lasted several centuries.
Los Utrera was founded by the musical family’s patriarch Esteban Utrera and based on a unique style learned from older generations. They are recognized today as one of the best Son Jarocho groups in the traditional music scene. The group uses various forms of guitars including guitarra de son, jarana, and jarana barroca, along with quijada (donkey jaw), zapateado (foot percussion) and violin. Experience Los Utrera at Isla Vista School on Friday, February 21; at Guadalupe City Hall on Saturday, February 22; and at the Marjorie Luke Theatre on Sunday, February 23.
