Assemblymember Das Williams on June 1 shepherded two bills off the Assembly floor and on to the State Senate. Both bills, AB 1303 and AB 178, passed with bipartisan support, Williams’ office reported in a media release.
“I am pleased to see these bills advance through the legislative process, but what is even more exciting is the bipartisan spirit being displayed during committee discussions,” Williams stated in the release. “AB 1303 and 178 are common sense ideas to get more alternative energy jobs and protect our public safety.”
AB 1303 extends state programs that fund grants for energy efficiency research at public universities and private companies developing new technologies to help address California’s high energy efficiency goals. This bill also helps move concepts to market allowing companies to leverage venture capital and other grants to move from the drawing board to the market. AB 1303 puts “boots on roofs” by extending a program that allows new housing developments integrate solar into their homes.
AB 178 is a bill that Assemblymember Williams has authored in conjunction with Assemblymember Jeff Gorell (R-Camarillo) who is currently serving in Afghanistan as a Navy intelligence officer. Passage of the bill on to the State Senate continues the bipartisan spirit with which the bill was introduced.
This proposed legislation would require defendants released from county jail pursuant to a federal court order, to sign a release agreement and create penalties for such inmates when they fail to appear or commit subsequent crimes while out of custody. This bill is modeled on existing provisions that pertain to defendants released on their own recognizance.
