Former SBCC athlete punts for S.F. 49ers

Mitch Wishnowsky came to SBCC in 2014 as a 22-year-old freshman. A focused and committed athlete, he was just as serious off the field, avoiding parties and opting instead for added training sessions while completing his degree in exercise sport science. That dedication paid off. Drafted by the San Francicso 49ers in 2019, Wishnowsky’s focus will be tested this weekend as the 49ers face Green Bay. Read more…

SBCC ranked among Top 60 online colleges in the nation

After interviewing hundreds of educators, advisors and students, Intelligent.com has compiled a list of the top 60 online colleges in the nation. SBCC is among those listed and was selected for “Best Student Recommendations.” Intelligent.com provides unbiased research to help students make informed decisions about higher education programs. SBCC moves forward with plan to replace old Sports Pavilion

The existing Sports Pavilion/Physical Education building, built in 1965, is in poor condition due to age, construction type and water intrusion issues. The proposed project includes replacing the existing building — comprised of the gym, locker rooms, Life Fitness Center, offices, training room and dance and group exercise rooms — with approximately equivalent square footage. See the KEYT story…

SBCC students save wounded victim on State Street

On Dec. 17, Jose Navarro and Romeo Lopez, two SBCC students who are part of the Downtown Ambassadors program, witnessed a fight on State Street. Rushing to action, they were able to save the life of a stabbing victim. Both students are completing their Justice Studies degrees this year and plan to become police officers in the future.

SBCC students take part in reforestation project

Minerva Rivera and Evelyn Bobadilla, two students in SBCC’s STEM Transfer Program, took part the UCSB-Smithsonian Scholars Program on the Channel Islands over the winter, working with a scientist from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. To help restore oaks to landscapes damaged by fire, they used feeding platforms to lure Island Scrub Jays onto recently burned land, hoping the birds will deploy their special talent there. Read more…

Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend event

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, a remembrance of the crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, AL, will take place on the SBCC campus on Saturday, Jan. 18, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Meet in Friendship Plaza outside the cafeteria on East Campus.

SBCC Theatre Group Presents ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’

Winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” is told from the perspective of a 15-year-old boy living in Wiltshire, England, who describes himself as a “mathematician with some behavioral difficulties.” Directed by Katie Laris, the play runs in the Garvin Theatre from February 28 – March 14. (Previews February 26 and 27).

The next meeting of the SBCC Board of Trustees is scheduled for Jan. 23, at 4 p.m. at the main campus in room A211. The agenda for Board Meetings can be found at least 72 hours prior to the meeting on the Board webpage.
