Lecture
Lecture: The Santa Monica Mountains as Hollywood Backdrop
Thursday, August 8, 2019, at 2:00pm • Free admission
In concert with their current exhibition, Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore will host several artist demonstrations and lectures at the Museum during the run of their show. In addition to backlots, most of the major, golden age Hollywood movie studios owned ranch properties in Southern California where they could film grand vistas, cowboy stunts, or Scarlett O’Hara in front of a glorious sunrise. Some of those old film sets were located in what is now the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. On Thursday, August 8, retired National Park Service Ranger Mike Malone will give a presentation on famous locations within the Santa Monica Mountains that have been preserved on film. Malone spent 16 years working in the SMMNRA and is both an outdoor enthusiast and a lover of classic movies. Malone’s presentation will begin at 2:00pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.
