David Eddington closes June 21, 2019 at the
Vita Art Center, so make plans to visit this week! David Eddington’s more recent paintings seem to liberate former realist imagery from its bearings and subject it to a kind of dream limbo. This liberation finds the figures in assorted landscapes of vibrant color; pastoral yet rarified, like in the grounds of an old stately home, complete with lakes and sometimes birds, quizzically observing the most recent newcomers.
This liberation from realism comes at a cost. Much like Adam and Eve, leaving the Garden of Eden, Eddington’s subjects become part of the vicissitudes of life. Unprotected from the static place they once inhabited, yet still maintaining the innocence of their former life, we witness their interactions as they are touched by both life’s wonder and vitality and its inevitable arc into eventual decay.
The atmosphere within each painting is one of colorful excitement, where we can experience something primordial within the walled garden of the aforementioned stately home. Veiled erotic vitality and new growth are always nearby.
