VENTURA — You are invited to Ventura County Library’s Mobile Library launch and ribbon cutting event on Tuesday, May 7 at 1:30pm at the Ventura County Government Center outside courtyard (between the Hall of Administration and Hall of Justice buildings).
The Mobile Library funding was possible by a $100,000 donation from the Ventura County Library Foundation and a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This event helps the Library celebrate National Library Week 2019 and National Bookmobile Day, which both occur in the month of April.
Ventura County Library boasts having the first mobile service in California, dating back to 1924 when Elizabeth Topping, then County Librarian, loaded saddlebags on horseback to deliver books throughout the county. Almost a century later, Ventura County Library’s modern day Mobile Library hits the road offering a full range of library services, including popular materials for all ages and in multiple formats such as books, DVDs, and audiobooks. The Mobile Library comes equipped with free Wi-Fi, wireless printing, laptop lending, and 3D Printing.
The Mobile Library serves communities with collections that include materials for children, teens, adults, and seniors in English and Spanish. Playing an important outreach role, the Mobile Library is connecting new users and raising awareness of library services throughout the county. It provides service to the underserved areas where many people have little or no library service due to lack of transportation or mobility issues (preventing residents from easy access to library buildings). The Mobile Library also is a great opportunity to introduce the love of reading to children and to discover the benefits of lifelong learning. In addition to providing wonderful services to many areas of the community, the Mobile Library is fuel-efficient.
This event is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact Nancy Schram, Ventura County Library Director at (805) 256-8535.
