OJAI — Kathryn Padgett will visit the Ojai Library at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2019, to deliver a talk entitled “Monsters: The Dark Side of Human Imagination.” Ms. Padgett comes to us via the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s Community Speakers Program.
Human imagination moved to the dark side in an attempt to explain fearful, unknown, and hard to understand circumstances; thus, monsters were born. A monster’s appearance and actions were used to create fear and physical harm, engendering a whole group of “heroic” humans or demigods to vanquish or contain these dark anomalies. These brave souls include Theseus, Hercules, and Perseus.
This presentation covers some of the many kinds of monsters imagined by humans and how they have been depicted in visual and performing arts. Enjoy learning about Frankenstein, Dracula, gorgons, demons, cyclops, Cerberus, the Minotaur, and many more.
