Santa Barbara City College is pleased to welcome two new faculty members to the SBCC community: Dr. Jess Estrada, Chemistry Instructor, and Darren Phillips, Counselor, Disability Services and Programs for Students (DSPS).

Dr. Jess Estrada has significant experience in the field of Chemistry. He was a Quality Control Analytical Chemist for the private sector, analyzing raw materials, preparing standard operating procedures, and training new chemists. Dr. Estrada’s instructional experience includes teaching General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry at Mt. San Jacinto College as a full-time instructor. He also taught General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Advanced Organic Chemistry at the University of California, Riverside. Dr. Estrada received his bachelor’s degree from California State University, San Bernardino, and his master’s degree and PhD from the University of California, Riverside.

Having grown up in Rancho Cucamonga, he spent his entire life in the Inland Empire. When asked about how he felt about moving to Santa Barbara he commented, “It is refreshing and exciting to be working with people who share my same philosophy and values. I am beyond grateful to be here at SBCC.”

Darren Phillips is the new Counselor working in DSPS. His primary duty is to provide assistance to students with disabilities by guiding, counseling, and assisting them to establish an educational foundation that will enable them to achieve educational success. He is also a member of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), where he is the lead interviewer for Violence Risk Assessments of our students.

For a number of years Darren has volunteered at the California Men’s Colony prison in San Luis Obispo, the Santa Barbara County Jail, and the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission, providing guidance and counseling for a successful way forward. Darren holds two associate degrees, one from Manchester University and one from Bury College. He received his bachelor’s degree in Business Education from the University of Brighton and a Master of Science degree in Psychology from Grand Canyon University.
