The McNish Gallery at Oxnard College is proud to present Fighters, a solo exhibit featuring paintings by Los Angeles artist Salomon Huerta. An artist lecture in conjunction with the OC LIVE Series will take place on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Oxnard College Performing Arts Building. A reception for the artist will follow the lecture on the same day from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Oxnard College McNish Gallery.

L.A. based artist Salomon Huerta is perhaps best known for his minimal portraits of the backs of peoples’ heads and color-saturated paintings of houses. For the exhibit, Fighters at Oxnard College, Huerta will show paintings of boxers as a way of celebrating fighters who inspired him as a child. These fighters made a positive impact on him and his siblings to stay out of trouble. Unlike his early works, his newer body of work is lush in surface and employs a more improvisatory, loose painting style that seems to capture not only his love for painting, but possibly the explosive power of the subjects being depicted.

Salomon Huerta was born in Tijuana and raised in Boyle Heights’ Ramona Gardens public housing project. He first gained acclaim and success for his minimalist portraits of the backs of people’s heads and color-saturated depictions of houses. Huerta’s art has been exhibited in influential exhibitions, galleries and museums, such as the 2000 Whitney Biennial in New York, the Gagosian Gallery in London, England, and Studio La Città in Verona, Italy. Organized by UCLA’s Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC), Huerta’s art was part of a major exhibition, “Home-So Different, So Appealing,”  at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). Huerta was a Regents’ Lecturer at UCLA (Fall, 2017). He received his M.F.A from UCLA School of Art and a B.F.A from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
