SANTA PAULA ART MUSEUM

JEANETTE COLE ART CENTER & COLE CREATIVITY CENTER
Every week is full of great moments at the Santa Paula Art Museum. Below are our 5 best from last week. And this week, don’t miss the grand opening of the Cole Creativity Center and our second Collage Essentials class (details below).
Visitor Discovers Our “Secret”
Ventura College student Kirstin Neumann recently wrote a report on the Museum for a class assignment. She also took adorable photos of her family while she was here (at left). She was gracious enough to share her essay with us, which includes her discovery of the “man in the secret room upstairs.” Spoiler alert: it’s John Nichols. You can read her full essay here.
Lee Cole to Attend Ribbon Cutting
We were so excited to learn that Mr. Lee Cole, Mayor Ginger Gherardi, and other members of the Santa Paula City Council will be joining us for a ribbon cutting ceremony at our new building on Saturday, August 18. Mr. Cole and his family donated the building that is now the Cole Creativity Center. The ceremony begins at 12:45pm, followed by our grand opening party from 1pm to 4pm.
Women at Work
During our second “Women Create!” class, Curator of Creativity Meg Phelps (who is a professor of art history in her spare time) gave a short lesson on famous female abstract artists, while artist Mary-Gail King taught several abstract techniques. King also noted that while abstract art may look effortless, it takes a lot of practice. In the case of our class, it also involves a lot of fun and laughs!
Chatting with Gina Niebergall
We spent an hour last Thursday having a chat with artist Gina Niebergall and guests of her gallery talk. It was an interactive conversation with Gina fielding questions from the audience that touched on everything from painting techniques to family stories. If you missed Gina’s talk, you can watch the full interview that we filmed for her current exhibit, The Natural World, here.
Getting Our Hands Dirty
The latest class to sell out at the Cole Creativity Center was Marianne McGrath’s three-hour ceramic workshop. McGrath is an assistant professor of art at CSU Channel Islands and is currently featured in the Museum’s Local Clay exhibit. Students were able to experiment with a variety of tools to create their own personal sculpture. Their creations will now be fired in McGrath’s kiln.
