April 25 — Dr. Tyrone C. Howard To Speak on Race, Culture and Equity at SBCC

Dr. Tyrone C. Howard
Professor Tyrone C. Howard will speak on race, culture and equity at SBCC’s Garvin Theatre Wednesday, April 25, at 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. Considered one of the foremost thinkers on race, equity, access and education in the country, Dr. Howard will engage in a discussion about how colleges can create access for all.

Dr. Howard is a Professor of Education at UCLA in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies’ Urban Schooling Division, and has recently accepted new responsibilities as their Associate Dean of Equity and Diversity and Chief Diversity Officer. His research is primarily concerned with academic achievement of youth in urban schools. His work has centered on the achievement gap facing African American and other culturally diverse students, and the importance of providing teachers the skills and knowledge to assist them in reversing persistent underachievement.

“Our office is excited to bring one of the top scholars in the nation to our campus to address these issues. Dr. Howard’s work is extremely relevant to our effort to address equity on our campus for all students,” stated Luis Giraldo, Director of Equity, Diversity and Culture at SBCC.

Dr. Howard’s new book, “Black Male(d)” examines the lives and identities of African American males in diverse contexts, and has recently become a bestseller. Professor Howard has been a contributor on National Public Radio, CBS/KCAL news, the Los Angeles Times, the Huffington Post and is also a contributor to the New York Times Educational Issues Forum. Dr. Howard has published over 60 peer review journal articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entrees, and technical reports. He was awarded an Early Career Award by the American Educational Research Association, which is the nation’s largest, and most prestigious educational research organization, for his work on equity and access in urban schools.
