April 6 — Oxnard Celebrates Selena Anniversaries with Song, Cinema and Sweets

OXNARD — The Queen of Tejano Music, Grammy award-winning singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, would have turned 47 this April (b. 4/16/71) had she not been fatally shot by her former friend and business manager, Yolanda Saldivar, on March 31, 1995. Passing away at just 24, this music and fashion icon had captured the hearts of the American public and became one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the last century. Her legacy lives on.

On April 6, the Oxnard Performing Arts Center is paying tribute to the “Tejano Madonna,” who catapulted one of the most dynamic music genres into the mainstream market (all with a fresh sense of fashion), with their next Dinner and a Movie. An inspired Tex Mex menu catered by Fresh and Fabulous will be followed by a live performance by Selena impersonator, Claudia Hermosa, and a screening of the 1992 film, Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez. For dessert: ice cream sandwiches made with conchas, a Mexican sweet bread!

Selena became a top-selling artist for her time, and posthumously earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “As a singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, actress, and fashion designer, Selena was nothing short of an accomplished, inspiring and genuine human being. We’re excited to bring this special event to The PACC and share her life story with our community,” comments the Center’s executive director, Chelsea Reynolds.

Released on March 21, 1997, the Selena biopic marks its 21st anniversary this year, and has become a classic in its own right, just like the woman who inspired it.
