SANTA BARBARA — Have you ever had the urge to move mountains? On Saturday March 17 you will have your chance when you visit just one of many interactive displays and hands-on activities at Santa Barbara City College’s Science Discovery Day.
Presented by the STEM Transfer Program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), Science Discovery Day is a free event for the whole family, designed by SBCC students and faculty to showcase the wonders of our world.
The Geology department has constructed an enormous sandbox where children, parents and grandparents can create a landscape, carve out rivers and move mountains. Telescopes will be set up so that stargazers can see sun spots and other phenomena, while learning what they are and why. Check out a number of different creatures as you wander through Biology classrooms, and then try your hand at a chemistry experiment. Math students will teach you how to recognize patterns in order to make predictions.
According to STEM Transfer Program Coordinator, Adolfo Corral, the purpose of Discovery Day is to allow people to experience science, math and technology not just as courses of serious study but as something fun and fascinating that permeates all aspects of life.
The event will take place on the SBCC Main Campus on March 17, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Be sure to pick up your event map at the welcome desk in front of the campus bookstore.
