Creating Change, Not Charity

Dear Friends,

We are on our way to another year of grant making!

The Social Justice Fund’s Board members are meeting with neighborhood activists, nonprofit leaders and elected officials—friends old and new—to learn which local issues concern them most.  These conversations will guide our focus for grant making in 2018 and strengthen the justice community in Ventura County.

In 2017 SJF granted a total of $25,000 to five different organizations addressing implicit bias in education. Some of the projects we funded break through the prejudice that has denied information and access to higher education to indigenous and new immigrant students.  Other projects combat the bullying and intimidation of LGBTQ youth in school by improving community understanding of sexual identity, gender expression and sexual orientation, and helping to create a safer, healthier educational environment for vulnerable youth.

Many thanks to the donors who made these grants possible and to all who attended our “Celebration of Justice” on June 28.  We appreciate your being our partners.

Because fighting injustice takes determination and time, consider becoming a monthly donor.  Every dollar you give to SJF works hard to create positive change in our communities!
