SBCC Career Skills Institute Helps Local Employees Get a Summer Jump on In-Demand Job Skills Summer Registration Now Open

Short courses and digital badges in business, design and technology offered tuition-free

SANTA BARBARA — SBCC Career Skills Institute is gearing up for a summer full of opportunities for local employees and job-seekers to gain the skills to advance in today’s workplace. Twenty-five convenient, short courses in business, design and technology are offered tuition-free this summer, including courses required to earn two of the Career Skills Institute’s most popular digital badges. The Career Skills Institute is endorsed by LinkedIn. Registration for summer courses is now open and courses are offered all throughout the term, which runs from May 15 through August 2, 2017.

“Summer is the perfect time to catch up or get ahead with valuable skills and powerful credentials offered here at the SBCC Career Skills Institute, that are quickly becoming recognized by local employers,” said Shelly Dixon, Director of the SBCC Career Skills Institute. “We encourage everyone in the community to consider trying out a course this summer, and local employers to integrate Career Skills Institute courses into their existing training programs.”

All Career Skills Institute courses are offered tuition-free to job seekers or employees seeking to increase their job security and advancement. The Career Skills Institute offers a comprehensive “emerging leaders” program to employers who seek to increase employee retention and potential, especially in the areas of management, communication skills and technical development.

This summer, participants can start or complete many of the dozens of digital badges currently available from the Career Skills Institute. In addition, all required courses to earn two popular digital badges are offered:

Strategic Marketing Badge (a total of 4 courses) Learn strategic marketing skills relating to social media communication, planning, and manipulation of goals

  • Develop skills in branding techniques, marketing maps, mobile marketing, and social media marketing
  • Digital Design Techniques Badge (a total of 4 courses)
  • Develop entry-level graphic design skills in print and online media
  • Take courses in digital photography, design techniques, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver

Most Career Skills Institute classes meet for eight hours and most digital badges include two to three classes, which may be completed during a single semester.
The Career Skills Institute, now endorsed by LinkedIn, focuses on providing training for the workforce in a unique flipped classroom setting, powered by Lynda.com from LinkedIn. Students gain access to Lynda.com video playlists selected by their instructors so class time can be spent solving real-world industry problems using the concepts learned. The result is an enhanced set of skills with a greater likelihood of job acquisition or career advancement.

Career Skills Institute at Santa Barbara City College: The SBCC Career Skills Institute launched in 2015 to address the growing gap between the skills employers need and the current lack of workforce skills. The innovative program serves job-seekers, employers and employees with a tuition–free noncredit certificate programs to provide career training for employees and job seekers.
