Supervisor Zaragoza to attend Gov. Brown’s luncheon Aug. 25 to honor Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto

Fifth District Supervisor John C. Zaragoza

SACRAMENTO — Ventura County Supervisor John C. Zaragoza will be traveling to Sacramento to attend a luncheon on Aug. 25 hosted by Gov. Jerry Brown and First Lady Anne Brown in honor of the President of the United Mexican States, Enrique Peña Nieto, Zaragoza’s office reported in a media release.

“Mexico is a neighbor, many things that happen on one side of the border affect the other,” Zaragoza said. “Besides cross-border family relationships, Mexico is a very important trade partner. Ventura County’s billion dollar agriculture industry depends heavily on workers from Mexico. Of the 15,000 – 25,000 (depending on the season) agricultural workers in Ventura County, it is estimated 91 percent were born in Mexico. That being said, I will be listening very closely to what is said about immigration reform.”

Supervisor Zaragoza stated he was “honored” to be invited to the event. He has closely followed the news events regarding the Governor’s recent trip to Mexico and is looking forward to learning what their vision is for the future relationship between our two countries, especially in California. Zaragoza said he would be looking for opportunities that might be of benefit to Ventura County.

Supervisor Zaragoza’s district is comprised of 70 percent Latinos. Many Fifth District constituents are from Mexico and have family currently living there. Recently, Oxnard and its Sister City, Ocotlán, Jalisco, Mexico celebrated 50 years of a cross-border friendship.

“Working with representatives from Mexico is not new to me, I have an excellent relationship with the Consulate of Mexico, representing the Tri-Counties,” Zaragoza said. “Consul Berenice Diaz Ceballos has an office in Oxnard and we have collaborated many times on issues of mutual concern.”
