In 1972, the American astronomer Josef Hynek categorized three types of “close encounters” with extraterrestrial objects:
First type: Sighting unidentified flying objects (UFO’s) in the sky
Second type: Observation of such an object together with physical evidence of its presence
Third type: Observation of such an object together with extraterrestrial beings
The third type, together with all its implications, is what interests us in this article.
I remember seeing in 1977 the science fiction movie, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” It was a huge success because of the uncomfortable truth that it forced us to confront: that as human beings, we have evolved up to a certain point throughout the millions of years that we have existed on the face of the earth, but that we still have so far to go to arrive at a more civilized, healthier, cleaner, more productive and less violent world.
In one scene of the movie, some of the inhabitants of an American community that had been temporarily captured by the space aliens, who appeared to be humans much more advanced than we are, descended from the visitors’ flying saucer. These recent captives seemed to be very calm, as if they were at peace with the world, besides, and more importantly, with themselves, as if they had come to know a great truth during their stay with the advanced beings.
One of these beings, the leader, emerged for a few moments. He appeared to be some sort of messiah, radiant, wise, master of an intelligence that we are very far from understanding and appreciating. He and his followers were capable of destroying us along with our planet, but it was evident that these beings recognized that peace is fundamental to our development and happiness. When I looked carefully at the visage of the leader that presented himself to the townspeople, I had the impression that he had compassion for us, that he understood the lack of wisdom of human beings up to this point in their history, and that he knew that one day, if we do not first destroy ourselves, we will achieve harmony and cooperation between countries to continue the evolution that is our destiny.
However, we are not going to change from one day to the next. When we observe that we, the inhabitants of this planet, are determined to kill each other in the name of religion, or because we have not learned to share natural resources, when we assassinate children before they are born (they, too, have “rights”), when we sully our own nest to then spend much more cleaning up than if we had been careful in the first place … we are warned that if we do not use fully the intelligence granted to us, we, the inhabitants of this sacred planet, will never be able to hand down to our children a truly peaceful and prosperous world.
¿Necesitamos Un Encuentro Cercano?

Segundo tipo: Observación de tal objeto junto con evidencia física de su presencia
Tercer tipo: Observación de tal objeto junto con seres extraterrestres
El tercer tipo, junto con todas sus implicaciones, es lo que nos interesa en este artículo.
Recuerdo haber visto en 1977 la película de ciencia ficción “Encuentros Cercanos del Tercer Tipo”. Fue un gran éxito debido a la verdad incómoda que nos obligó a enfrentar: que como seres humanos, hemos evolucionado hasta cierto punto a través de los millones de años desde que aparecimos sobre la faz de la tierra, pero que todavía nos falta tanto para llegar a un mundo más civilizado, más sano, más limpio, más productivo y menos violento.
En una escena de la película, algunos habitantes de una comunidad americana que habían sido capturados temporalmente por los extranjeros espaciales, los cuales parecían ser humanos mucho más avanzados que nosotros, se bajaron del platillo volador de los visitantes. Estos cautivos recientes parecían estar muy calmados, como si estuvieran en paz con todo el mundo, y además, y aún más importante, con ellos mismos, como si hubieran llegado a conocer una gran verdad durante su estancia con los seres adelantados.
Uno de estos seres, el líder, emergió por unos momentos. Parecía ser una especie de mesías, radiante, sabio, dueño de una inteligencia que somos muy lejos de comprender y apreciar. Él y sus seguidores eran capaces de fulminarnos, de destruir nuestro planeta, pero era evidente que estos seres reconocían que la paz es fundamental para nuestro desarrollo y felicidad. Cuando me fijé en el rostro del líder que se presentó al pueblo, tuve la impresión de que nos tenía compasión, que comprendió la falta de sabiduría de la raza humana hasta este punto de su historia, y que sabía que algún día, si no nos destruimos antes, alcanzaremos la harmonía y la cooperación entre los países para continuar la evolución que es nuestro destino.
Sin embargo, no vamos a cambiar de la noche a la mañana. Cuando observamos que nosotros, los habitantes de este planeta, nos empeñamos en matar a otros en nombre de una religión, o porque no hemos aprendido a compartir recursos naturales, cuando asesinamos a los niños todavía no nacidos (ellos también tienen sus “derechos”), cuando ensuciamos nuestro propio nido para luego después gastar mucho más limpiándolo que si hubiéramos sido cuidadosos desde el principio…quedamos advertidos que si no utilizamos plenamente la inteligencia que se nos otorgó, nosotros, los habitantes de este sagrado planeta, jamás podremos entregar a nuestros hijos un mundo verdaderamente pacífico y próspero.
