SANTA BARBARA — The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at UC Santa Barbara will present a free “Latina Mother / Adolescent Daughter Communications” lecture by Dr. Laura Romo from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, June 10 at Faulkner Gallery, Santa Barbara Public Library, 40 E. Anapamu St., Santa Barbara.
Romo will present research related to interventions to enhance the lives of Latino mothers and their daughters. Through her research, Romo developed effective ways to reach the mothers of young Latinos to be more comfortable and effective in discussing pregnancy and HIV prevention, according to a media release. In addition, her project encouraged mothers to foster their daughters’ educational and carrier aspirations. This research was funded by the highly competitive William T. Grant Foundation’s Scholars Awards.
Romo is an associate professor in the Department of Education at UCSB and the director of the university’s Chicano Studies Insitute.
The presentation will include a community discussion about the benefits of current interventions as well as the opportunity for audience members to contribute new ideas for future interventions.
