From Thousand Oaks to Oxnard, Ventura, Santa Barbara and beyond, communities are preparing for the annual Día de los Muertos celebrations in the 805 region.
The Mexican Consulate in Oxnard recently requested community organizers to submit a comprehensive list of Día de los Muertos events in the region and Amigos805.com will post those and other listings as they become available.
As of our e-newsletter publication deadline, the following events have been submitted to Amigos805.com:
> Oct. 27 — As part of California Lutheran University’s observance of the Day of the Dead, a traditional altar will be set up at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at the university’s Ahmanson Science Center. Face painting, entertainment and light refreshments will be presented by the Latin American Student Organization from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. > Oct. 30 — The Santa Barbara Museum of Art will present its 22nd annual Free Family Day: Día de los Muertos celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1130 State St. The free event includes music and dance performances, art-making activities, bilingual storytelling, a special display of altars created by school and community groups, and traditional refreshments. > Nov. 1 — MEChA will present a Día de los Muertos celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1 at CSU Channel Islands in Malibu Hall 100. Call Jaimie Hoffman at 805.437.3141 for more information.
> Nov. 1-2 — The Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project and El Kalpulli de difusión cultural Atlachinolli A.C. will present a ¡Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead! celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 1 and 2 at Café on A /Acuña Gallery and Cultural Center, 438 So. A St., Oxnard. The event includes an altar exhibit, Oaxacan artesanias and specialty bread for sale and Oaxacan chocolate drink samples. > Nov. 6 — The Día de los Muertos celebration “Remembering Adolfo Camarillo,” will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Conejo Mountain Memorial Park. Activities include face painting, build your own altar, muerto art exhibit, local food and craft vendors and a vintage car show.
