Xavier Montes exhibit artist reception set for March 2 in Santa Paula

The Ventura College Santa Paula Site will hold a Meet the Artist Reception for an exhibit featuring the works of artist Xavier Montes from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 2 at 957 Faulkner Road, Suite 106 in Santa Paula.

Montes, born and raised in Santa Paula, is affectionately known by his nickname, “Big X,”  for both his size and talents, the college reported in a media release. He is a practicing visual artist (acrylics), a musician (folk harp, guitar and vocals), community activist and educator teaching and promoting cultural arts.

One of his major accomplishments was to establish the De Colores Art Show, which he ran and curated for 18 years. The show has become one of Santa Paula’s most popular art and cultural events. In 2012, Montes passed the torch to his 18-year show to upcoming artist Andrea Mendoza so Montes can pursue additional endeavors with his art, music and community involvement.

His exhibit: “Xavier Montes: Some Works Past and Present,” is a colorful display depicting images of Latino life in the fields, in song and dance and iconic cultural illustrations.

The reception features live music by Trio Tricolor, Montes’ newest all female trio, refreshments, appetizers by Zapparelli’s pizzaria, free parking and free admission.
