SANTA MARIA — Looking for a job that involved teaching science and coaching sports led Dana Dowell to a 34-year career at Santa Maria High School.
Mr. Dowell is retiring today.
“There are always ups and downs with any career,’’ said Dowell, who graduated from Righetti High School. “It has been a rewarding career where I made life-long friendships with students and staff. I think many people underestimate what it takes to be a high school teacher. It is not an 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. job. It has been a great experience.’’
Throughout the years, Mr. Dowell has seen many changes at the oldest campus within the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District.
“There were no cell phones or computers here in 1986 when I started,’’ he added. “State test scores are more important, the curriculum has become more challenging and technology is playing a larger role. The construction has really changed and improved our campus.’’
Mr. Dowell, who also served as the Saint In School Intervention Coordinator, attended and played baseball for RHS, AHC and Cal Poly. He coached baseball at SMHS.
When the last bell rings today, Mr. Dowell will begin a new part of life. His plans include more fishing, attending spring training and spending more time with his two sons and wife.
“Sleeping in is definitely out of the question,’’ he said with a smile.
Principal Steve Campbell and assistant principal Ivan Diaz thanked Mr. Dowell for his outstanding service.
“For 34 years as a teacher and baseball coach, and a Santa Maria Saint, whenever we needed a right-hander to come in from the bullpen, Dana answered the call,’’ Campbell said. “We will all miss Dana around here.’’
