September News from Peoples’ Self-Help Housing

Students are still learning remotely, but in partnership with local school districts, our educators are supporting families throughout the whole day, and not just with homework!
Dear Friend,
This is a bittersweet time for me, as I’ve been sending a lot of farewell notes lately. With the exception of our soon to be published annual impact report, this is my final message to you as the President & CEO of Peoples’ Self-Help Housing. In a few days I will hand over the reins to my successor Ken Trigueiro. Ken will nurture and grow our property portfolio, and as many of you know will be a humble and effective leader to our staff. I am thrilled to pass on the legacy of advocacy for strong housing legislation and policy, for affordable housing and for those most vulnerable in our community. I am most happy about the community collaborations we’ve formed and the stakeholders we’ve gathered these last few years, jumping on the Peoples’ bandwagon and drinking our same Kool-Aid!Even though, over the past six years, I’ve used this space to opine on every aspect of affordable housing – the lack of it, the cost of it, the people who regulate it, the people who legislate it – I’d like to take this final opportunity to write about the most important aspect of it all, the people who live in it.Through my own personal journey of growing up in an unstable environment, going to bed hungry, and having no idea how to escape the grinding poverty I was raised in, it became my life’s mission as I prospected and gained opportunity to help as many people as I could to do the same. So in a few days, when I move out of the CEO’s office, of all the memories I will leave with, burning the brightest and the longest, are those of residents who gained opportunity on my watch and the families and individuals I had the greatest pleasure to not only support but who I got to know personally.

Francisco who glowed when he received his citizenship, Elvia who won a national award for her community organizing efforts, Bryan who went to Notre Dame, brother and sister Annette and John who built their own homes, Oscar who taught music to our kids, Mr. Lee who took care of the Victoria Hotel, Rocky who tended the gardens, Sarah who found a place to call home with her service dog… there just isn’t enough space here to mention them all.

This job has truly been the highlight of my personal and professional life, so I just want to thank each of you for the immeasurable privilege of having worked alongside you. Of course it’s going to be hard to walk away, but I know that with such need in our communities, the task will never be finished. So I leave the next chapter to others equally capable to carry on the work and to have the chance to make amazing memories of their own.

Warmest regards,
John

Introducing Our New CEO
Kenneth Trigueiro has been selected to serve as the next President and Chief Executive Officer of Peoples’ Self-Help Housing (PSHH). Taking over from John Fowler, who has served the organization for over a decade, Trigueiro who is the current Executive Vice-President will assume his new appointment on Monday, October 5th.Making the announcement, Board Chair Shelly Higginbotham said “Throughout the executive search, the board was continually struck not only by Ken’s demonstrated skill, but by his empathy for the residents we serve. His profound dedication to our mission also influenced our decision, along with the respect for his work conveyed by regional and national partners, and the obvious affection held for him by team members throughout the company.”Trigueiro first joined Peoples’ Self-Help Housing in 2005 coming from a longtime and distinguished career in banking and affordable housing development.
