Shadow and Light:
The Landscape Paintings of Bruce Everett
On view now through July 9, 2023
Closing soon: “Shadow and Light” is a 30-year survey of Central Coast artist Bruce Everett’s magnificent landscapes in oil. Characterized by bold and often dark compositional forms, dramatic effects of light, and a sense of solitude, Everett’s paintings combine both smooth and expressive brushwork and include large studio pieces and small plein air scenes depicting locales from Los Angeles north to San Luis Obispo.
While we highly recommend experiencing Bruce’s art in person, we hope you enjoy this abbreviated look at Everett’s exhibit in your inbox!
Bruce Everett was born in Los Angeles, but raised in the Midwest. He received a Master’s in Art from the University of Iowa, and an MFA in Painting from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Everett was a Professor of Art at California State University, Northridge from 1970 until retiring in 2005.

“For me, the physical act of finding, composing, and painting the landscape has become more than a formal and sensual activity. To marvel at our presence in the world is the true subject.”

The Santa Paula Connection
The artist with a rented Cessna at Santa Paula Airport in 1979.
After learning to fly Cessna aircraft in the early 1980s, Bruce Everett bought and assembled his own ultralight aircraft, which the artist describes as “basically a hang glider with a motor.” Flying his ultralight allowed Everett to access remote areas and view the landscape from above—a vantage point replicated in a number of his paintings. One of Everett’s favorite places to depart from was Santa Paula Airport (see photo above). The artist has since retired from flying, much to the relief of his wife, Patti.
