Santa Paula Art Museum’s Cole Creativity Center Announces New Lineup of Fall Classes

SANTA PAULA — The Santa Paula Art Museum is excited to announce its new schedule of art classes for fall 2018. Classes for children and adults are offered year-round at the Museum’s new Cole Creativity Center and the lineup of courses changes quarterly. This fall, adults are invited to explore a wide variety of creative classes led by professional teaching artists. Adult courses are open to everyone age 16 and over. “Women Create” ($35/class), the already popular monthly women’s group, will continue to meet on Tuesday, September 11, Tuesday, October 9, and Tuesday, November 13, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. “Collage Essentials” ($35/class) returns with classes on Tuesday, September 18, and Tuesday, October 16, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. Also back by popular demand is CSUCI Assistant Professor of Art Marianne McGrath’s “Personal Sculpture” workshop ($40/class) on Tuesday, October 2, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Brand new courses this fall include “Printmaking Techniques” ($65/four-part series) for kids age 10 to 13, which will be held on four consecutive Wednesdays: Wednesday, October 3, Wednesday, October 10, Wednesday, October 17, and Wednesday, October 24, from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. Adults can enjoy their own in-depth series with “Still Life in Oils” ($160/four-part series), which will be taught on four consecutive Thursdays: Thursday, October 4, Thursday, October 11, Thursday, October 18, and Thursday, October 25, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Other highly original fall courses include a “Historic Photography Demonstration” ($50/class) on Saturday, October 27, from 10:00am to 1:00pm, and “Exploring Yupo” ($40/class) on Tuesday, November 6, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Heading into the holiday season, “Personal Bookmaking” ($35/class) on Saturday, November 17, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, and the “Suminagashi Workshop” ($35/class) on Saturday, December 8, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm, are perfect for adults interested in making personalized gifts for loved ones.

All skill levels are welcome, and all supplies are provided in every class at the Cole Creativity Center. Pre-registration is required, and classes fill quickly. Gallery Talk: Printmaker Gail Hercher

Description of event:Printmaker and painter Gail Hercher, M.F.A., will share everything there is to know about gelatin monoprints, a relatively new printmaking method which does not require a printing press. As a printmaker, Hercher focuses primarily on gelatin monoprinting because it is an expressive medium that uses a handmade gelatin plate with colorful non-toxic inks and is printed by hand. This makes it a spontaneous, joyous, and inexpensive printmaking experience for both beginner and advanced printmakers.

Description of event:Artist and guest curator Xavier Montes is marking the 25thyear of his “De Colores Art Show” with an invitational exhibit entitled “Sanctuary/Santuario.” Featuring art by over 30 esteemed artists, the show will honor the many men, women and families who have risked their lives crossing the border – for some many borders – in order to seek sanctuary in the United States. The premiere party on Saturday, September 15, 2018, will feature poetry readings, Folklórico dancers, and music by Cali-Mex band “Los Fabulocos,” as well as Xavier Montes and his De Colores music students.

Equal parts memory, curiosity, experiment and instinct, collage is a fascinating medium with endless potential for creative expression. In an ongoing series, artist Karen Browdy will share the essential skills, tools, and techniques needed to build a meaningful art practice in collage. Students will apply basic art theories using a variety of collage strategies and leave each session with their own personal creation. This is a class for adults age 16 and over. The Land of Light: Art, Science, and Play

Description of event:Now in its second year, “The Land of Light” invites visitors to see and experience art in a whole new way. The event is inspired by artists of all ages and is designed to engage the community through interactive art installations including lighting effects, visual film graphics, and displays of science and technology. Admission to the event is free for everyone. At sunset, a special lighting ceremony will activate monumental light and video projections, illuminating the variety of exhibitions on display. Exhibits range from two-dimensional works to three-dimensional sculptures, “art cars,” robotics, and more. Indoor and outdoor spaces also feature maker stations where guests are encouraged to interact with and add to the various artworks and displays.

In responding to the theme, the artists have created a thought-provoking collection of artworks that is simultaneously literal and metaphorical, social and personal, political and spiritual.

Description of event:A rare opportunity! Follow photographer Luther Gerlach and witness the magic of historic photographic processes. Participants will get an up-close view of wet-collodion tintypes and salt print processes as Gerlach uses his mammoth-plate vintage camera to shoot at nearby locations.
