Dream Center a long-awaited reality for undocumented students

The college celebrated the grand opening of its Dream Center in the Campus Center/CESJ space on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in recognition of Undocumented Student Week of Action, Oct. 17-20. 

SBCC’s Annual Report to the Community has arrived

Just published, SBCC’s 2021-2022 Annual Report to the Community reminds us all of the many good things that happened last school year. Pick one up at the Administration building front desk and/or enjoy the digital version here.

Superintendent/President search timeline announced

A timeline to recruit and hire the next SBCC superintendent/president has been established, and  formation of a 21-person candidate screening committee – who will will review applications, interview potential candidates and recommend finalists to the Board of Trustees – is underway. EOPS programs support students at Thanksgiving
and beyond

Food insecurity remains a struggle for many of SBCC’s EOPS/CARE/CalWorks students. This year, due to many factors cited by advisor and SPARC program coordinator Chelsea Lancaster, staff is meeting students’ holiday needs a bit differently …    Donate through a SBCC Foundation grant here.

Veteran-focused photo class at Wake Campus expanding to include first responders

Taught by veterans for veterans, “Digital Photography: Techniques and Creative Applications in a Community-Oriented Setting,” serves as a creative outlet and social network for local veterans in the community. Read more and check out recent news coverage on the program.

Oropeza featured on Kelly Corrigan Wonders podcast

Back in April, the Kelly Corrigan Wonders podcast staff visited main campus and interviewed English professor Clara Oropeza, Ph.D., as part of a series titled “Live from College.” The episode features compelling discussion on serving students in the midst of the pandemic and beyond, and how to reach them through great literature. SBCC transfer-level ESL program featured in CAPacity Gazette

ESL professor Dr. Marit Ter Mate-Martinsen’s innovative English 110 program for mulilingual students was focused in a recent issue of the prestigious CAPacity Gazette (page 9). Meet a couple of students from the program and hear more from Dr. Ter Mate-Martinsen here.

College Transfer Day a huge success!

More than 79 colllege and university admissions representatives (CSUs, UCs, out-of-state and international) were on hand at SBCC’s west campus meadow on Nov. 2 for College Transfer Day. Images here

Student Trustee attends ACCT Congress in NY

SBCC Student Trustee Adrianina Rajosera attended the Assoc. of Community College Trustees Leadership Congress in New York City, Oct. 26-29. “I left the Congress with much-needed knowledge and connections that will help me and my colleagues continue our work to make SBCC an even better, inclusive and resourceful place for students,” she said. SBCC MESA students handpicked to attend leadership conference

Four talented MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) students were selected to attend the MESA Student Leadership STEM conference at San Diego’s Marriott Mission Valley, Oct. 28-29. This year’s conference challenged students to design a product/service that addressed a problem caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Click here for more.

Theatre students win Monologue Competition

The Annual Sarah Smith Monologue Competition was held Oct. 26 in the Jurkowitz Theatre with 20+ students  presenting monologues to a panel of judges, including Anne Smith Towbes. Winners won $1,000 scholarships. Click here for names of winners and more.

SEL Art Fair a must for holiday shoppers

Just in time for the holidays, over 50 arts and crafts faculty and students in the SBCC School of Extended Learning will be selling their wares at the Wake Campus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 7. Come by to see an array of beautifully designed ceramics, pieces of jewelry, fabric arts, cards, glass and more created by your friends and neighbors!

Atkinson Gallery exhibit features ’15 works on paper’

Works by artists Sadie Barnette, Mimi Lauter, Manuel López, Narsiso Martinez, Mark Thomas Gibson, and Gabriella Sanchez are currently on display until Dec. 9 at the Atkinson Gallery.

Theatre Group announces auditions for ‘A Comedy of Tenors’ 

The Theatre Group at SBCC announces auditions for its spring production of “A Comedy of Tenors” by Ken Ludwig, directed by Katie Laris. Auditions are by appointment on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 5:30-9:00 p.m. in the Jurkowitz Theatre or by video submission. The production is slated for March 1-18.
