Students and community to benefit from garden project

On June 3, KCBX public radio aired a report by Beth Thorton, who interviewed SBCC Foundation Grant Director Rachel Johnson and Dr. Adam Green of the Biological Sciences Department about the nearly $100,000 grant the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the SBCC Foundation for an ecological and edible garden project. The project will connect students and residents to a network of edible gardens, and foster a connection to local ecosystems. Listen to the five-minute broadcast here…

Another year, another scholarship cycle completed

In March and early April, the Scholarship Review and Selection Committees, along with individual department committees, awarded over 700 students just under $1 million in scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year. The May 6 issue of the Santa Barbara Independent honored the recipients in an eight-page spread created by the SBCC Foundation.

Professor Jim Mooy helps UCSB music perform live via YouTube

On May 26, the UCSB Chamber Choir performed live – for the first time since the pandemic hit – on the UCSB YouTube channel. The next day, the UCSB Jazz Ensemble also gave their first live performance via YouTube. SBCC’s Jim Mooy made it possible by helping them to set up the technology needed. Read the Noozhawk story…

She was recently selected to be among the 2021 cohort of The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at the University of Washington, a multi-summer, undergraduate learning experience that explores conservation throughout the Pacific Northwest.

SBCC Choirs create beauty and peace amidst turbulent times

As the Spring term drew to a close, Music Department Chair Nathan Kreitzer encouraged everyone to take a moment to enjoy some music from our choirs. They have been hard at work creating some beauty and a little peace amidst the last turbulent year. Click here to see and hear the concert on YouTube.

Luria Library a crucial resource during the pandemic and beyond

In many ways, Luria Library has been the Covid-19 information hub for the entire campus community. For three semesters since the start of the pandemic, library staff assembled to offer curbside pick-up of chromebooks and wifi hotspots — as well as providing crucial pandemic information on emergency grants, working from home resources, wellness services, etc., through its user-friendly website.

Read the Q & A with Library Director Kenley Neufeld to find out what it’s like to run Luria Library during a pandemic.
