Andy Ruiz of Oxnard has won his first bout at the Southern Calif Golden Gloves Tournament held March 8 at the Lincoln Park recreation center in Los Angeles, Manuel Herrera reported in a media release.
With a score of 5-0, Ruiz advances to the quarter finals on Thursday. Ruiz almost ended the fight in the third round when his opponent was given a standing eight count, Herrera said. This tournament is yet another step for the young fighter who’s dream is to make the 2012 U.S. Olympic team.
Ruiz, 17, is a senior at Oxnard High and is trained by Marcos Contreras. He represents the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy.
