Parents of incoming kindergarten students are invited to learn about the Rio School District’s Dual Immersion Academy at an information meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 at Rio Real Elementary School, 1140 Kenney St., Oxnard, the district reported in a media release.
Open to students countywide, the Dual Immersion Academy begins in kindergarten and continues through fifth grade. The goal is for students to become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural in English and Spanish.
This program is geared for native English and Spanish speakers, who are taught by experienced bilingual teachers. Students enter the program in kindergarten, where 90 percent of the instruction is in Spanish. Increasing amounts of English are added each year until 50 percent is reached in fourth grade and continues in fifth grade. Instruction at every grade level focuses on listening, speaking, reading, writing, the arts and culture in both languages.
