November News from People’s Self-Help Housing

eNews | November 2021

Thank you to Miner’s Ace Hardware for a generous $5,000 gift, which provided new computers for students at River View Townhomes! Miner’s President Paul Filice (pictured right) and Community Relations Tahirih Ellison (pictured left) recently visited students at River View to see their impact!
Dear Friend,We are truly thankful this season for your partnership with us.

Your support has sustained so many this year who have continued to experience adversity. For each of our 5,000 residents, you have helped them encourage each another, raise healthy families, and have covered them with your care and concern. We give thanks that so many of you are regular, monthly, and annual supporters of our programs and services. To those who came alongside our mission and gave for the first time this year, I am so grateful for you.

Every one of you have helped foster new opportunities, improve lives, and have helped thousands of households thrive. Through support of our 11 learning centers, you have ensured that our youth have bright futures, for our older residents have made supportive services available to everyone. And for those patiently waiting on our housing lists for a place to call their own, you’ve opened up our pipeline so that another 1,000 homes are on the way!

Though it seems so many of us have experienced difficulties this year, for that testing of who we are as a community, we can all give thanks. We have been shown to be partners with positive intentions, strong collaborators, a community with resilience. We have roundly demonstrated that when we pull in a united direction, we are more responsive, more supportive, and more empathetic to those most in need. Though many obstacles remain in the way of resolving disparity and injustice, we are best able to endure and triumph when we all work altogether.

May you all experience a joyous and contemplative holiday, reflecting on the many good fruits we have collectively achieved. Happy Thanksgiving!

Pismo Terrace Moves Forward!
One of our newest projects, Pismo Terrace, broke ground this month! Located in Pismo Beach, this 1.2 acre site will provide 50 units of new affordable housing, as well as an onsite community center. Residents will have access to onsite property management and supportive housing services at no additional cost to residents. The project will also set aside 25 units for extremely low income individuals, including five homes for transitional age youth.

Produced in collaboration with the 5Cities Homeless Coalition, this development has been approved, funded, and planned in record time! Thank you to all of our partners, including National Equity Fund, the City of Pismo Beach, the County of San Luis Obispo, the San Luis Obispo Housing Trust Fund, the CA Department of Housing and Community Development, and Chase, for their support in making this project possible!

Bloom Again Renewed Support
The Bloom Again Foundation, a Southern California based nonprofit which provides rapid-response financial assistance for economically vulnerable women, have renewed their support of People’s Self-Help Housing. Through the provision of living essentials and financial help, past gifts have helped scores of PSHH residents emerge emotionally and financially strong after life changing events and we are grateful for the continued partnership!

One resident shared:
“With deep gratitude and extended thanks to the Bloom Again Foundation for the great and generous gift given in a time of extreme need. You have opened a door—a chance to battle a life threatening illness—a chance that a mother might see her beloved son again. And most of all, peace and hope for recovery. May I bloom again.”

Library On The Go
In collaboration with Santa Barbara Public Library, the ‘Library On The Go’ van made a stop at Dahlia Court in Carpinteria. Residents were able to utilize free wifi, library card registration, book checkout, catalog support, and much more. Our residents were grateful for the opportunity to have the library, and their myriad of services, brought right to their doorsteps!
