CAMARILLO — Artists W. Scott Miles, Susan Petty and Roxie Ray present their individual representations on the theme Elements in an exhibition of paintings and video installations that explore the intersections of visual abstraction and multimedia. Opening with a public reception, 4 to 6 p.m., Nov. 3, at Studio Channel Islands in Camarillo, the Elements theme flows through the exhibition, connecting three diverse artistic visions. The Elements exhibition will be on display Nov. 2 through Dec. 15 at SCI’s Blackboard Gallery, 2222 East Ventura Blvd., Camarillo.

W. Scott Miles’ video installation pieces present a slow-motion video visual with a music track by Another Electronic Musician. The pieces use close-up water imagery that serves as a metaphor for the cycle of building and releasing tension and stress that is part of the human condition in today’s society. Miles believes that we are all bound by the confines of time and space, but an artist can break those confines to present a new vision. He uses this idea to manipulate time and space through slow-motion video and macro-imaging to challenge the viewer’s perceptions and relationships with the world around them.

The impetus in Susan Petty’s work in the Elements exhibit is focused on the paradox of images which are at once both simple and complex—the patterns of simple subjects, the glimmer of water or the surface of tree bark rendered in complex detail. Petty will present work in three mediums: oil, graphite and watercolor.

Roxie Ray’s intention beyond the elements of shapes, textures, colors and line is to evoke an emotional response. The ultimate aim is to find truth and what motivates her in the discovery process of water and farm workers. Ray says her sanctuary is water and where she feels alive; the farm workers vocalize her generational and inherited feelings of being autonomous and marginalized—two totally different subjects that are elemental parts of her.

“Elements is a highly innovative exhibition including new media and traditional fine art. It presents breathtaking work responding to universal themes that connect with the audience and invite the viewer to experience them in a new way,” said Peter Tyas, Studio Channel Islands’ executive director.

Artist W. Scott Miles will give an artist talk, “Using Technology for Artistic Expression,” from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Blackboard Gallery, 2222 E. Ventura Blvd., Camarillo. For more information, visit: http://studiochannelislands.org/ or call 805-383-1368.
